Maurice Lede is set to become the recent Africa correspondent for NOS, joining Elles van Gelder. The 39-year-old presenter and program maker will start his role on May 1st, with Dakar, Senegal, serving as his base.

Lede succeeds Saskia Houttuin, who has transitioned to the role of correspondent in France.

Lede’s background is in law, but he is widely recognized for his television work, including presenting Het Klokhuis from 2011 to 2018 and 3 op Reis from 2016 to 2022. He has too hosted De Nationale Reistest, Trippers, and Serious Request.

From Travel Programs to Frontline Reporting

Lede’s previous work includes the 2014 documentary Wrakstukken, focusing on the 25th anniversary of the SLM plane crash in Suriname. Through Trippers, he reported on issues such as gang violence in El Salvador, the oppression of women in Guatemala, gun culture in the US, and poaching in South Africa. He has also contributed travel stories to Columbus Travel magazine.

“For years, I have cherished the desire to become an Africa correspondent for NOS. It is an honor to be able to report and bring stories from a continent that touches, excites, and inspires me,” Lede stated.

Esther Bootsma, head of the NOS foreign desk, described Lede as an experienced TV presenter and program maker, emphasizing his enthusiasm as a key factor in the decision to appoint him.

The Expanding Role of Correspondents in a Changing Media Landscape

The appointment of a second Africa correspondent signals a growing commitment from NOS to in-depth coverage of the continent. This reflects a broader trend in international journalism, where news organizations are recognizing the increasing importance of Africa in global affairs.

With the rise of digital media and the 24-hour news cycle, the role of the foreign correspondent has evolved. They are no longer simply reporters filing stories. they are expected to be multimedia storytellers, engaging with audiences on multiple platforms, including social media and video.

Lede’s Background: A Blend of Journalism and Legal Expertise

Maurice Lede’s unique background – a law degree combined with extensive experience in travel and current affairs programming – positions him well to tackle the complexities of reporting from Africa. His previous work demonstrates a willingness to engage with challenging and sensitive topics, a crucial skill for any foreign correspondent.

His experience with Trippers, in particular, suggests an ability to connect with people on the ground and advise compelling stories that go beyond the headlines.
