Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema sent a private letter on June 6 to Kanye West urging the hip-hop artist to leave the Dutch capital immediately following his concert series in Arnhem, according to correspondence obtained by NRC. While Halsema acknowledged in the English-language letter that she lacked a legal basis to ban the rapper from the city, she stated it was her clear preference that he depart due to a string of recent antisemitic remarks and controversial public behavior.

During his multi-day stay at the Conservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam this past June, Kanye West—who now goes by the name Ye—faced intense public scrutiny surrounding his arrival in the Netherlands. In her correspondence, Halsema requested that the rapper behave with the utmost respect toward Amsterdammers in general and those with a Jewish background in particular during his stay. According to a spokesperson for the mayor cited by NRC, the city chose to publish the previously confidential letter after details began circulating and local media outlets filed requests for the text.
Halsema explained in the text that while Amsterdam protects uncomfortable opinions as a free city, “freedom is not the same as looking away.” Because the municipality carries the historic scars of the persecution and destruction of its Jewish community during the Second World War, the mayor emphasized that antisemitism is strictly unwelcome in the capital. West did not respond to the letter, according to municipal spokespersons.
Legal Hurdles and Political Outcry Over Arnhem Concerts
The diplomatic and municipal friction followed West’s controversial concert bookings at the GelreDome in Arnhem. A broad majority of the Dutch House of Representatives previously urged the government to block the artist from entering the country, pointing to statements in which he praised Adolf Hitler on social media, called himself a nazi, released a track titled ‘Heil Hitler’, and sold clothing emblazoned with swastikas. West later offered apologies for those actions and statements in The Wall Street Journal, attributing his conduct to a bipolar disorder.
Efforts by the Centraal Joods Overleg to halt the Arnhem performances via a summary proceedings court case ultimately failed. The court and Arnhem mayor Ahmed Marcouch both concluded there was no sufficient legal basis under Dutch law to prohibit the concerts on public order grounds, allowing tens of thousands of fans to attend the sold-out shows.
