McIlroy Shares Masters Lead After Dramatic Third Round

The 2026 Masters Tournament is set for a thrilling finish after Rory McIlroy’s historic lead evaporated during Saturday’s third round at Augusta National. McIlroy now shares the lead with Cameron Young, setting the stage for a captivating final day.

McIlroy began the third round with a six-stroke advantage, the largest 36-hole lead in Masters history. However, a challenging day on the course saw him card a 73, bringing his total to -11. A bogey on the first hole and a double bogey on the 11th proved costly.

Cameron Young seized the opportunity, firing a 65 to join McIlroy at the top of the leaderboard. Scottie Scheffler also posted a 65, positioning himself just four strokes behind the leaders.

The tournament remains wide open, with several players within striking distance. Sam Burns is only one stroke behind the leaders, while Shane Lowry is two back after achieving a hole-in-one on the 6th hole. Justin Rose and Jason Day are also in contention, three strokes off the lead.

Ludvig Åberg and Alex Norén, despite recording rounds of 69, find themselves too far behind to realistically challenge for the title.

Despite losing ground, McIlroy remains optimistic. The defending champion, who completed a career grand slam with his victory last year, stated, “I desire to believe I’m playing a little freer now. And I’m going to play as if I already have a green jacket, which I do. Sometimes I have to remind myself of that.”

A victory would create McIlroy the fourth golfer to win back-to-back Masters titles, joining Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods.
