Medicine Hat Firefighters Brave the Elements for Muscular Dystrophy: A 17-Year Tradition
The Medicine Hat Firefighters Charitable Foundation (MHFF) is once again taking its commitment to the community to new heights – literally. From April 10 to 12, Fire Station No. 2 will be home to the 17th annual Rooftop Campout, a fundraising event dedicated to supporting those affected by muscular dystrophy.
A Long-Standing Partnership with a Powerful Impact
For nearly two decades, the Medicine Hat firefighters have participated in this unique fundraising effort. This year, Firefighters Andrew Archer and Cale Schafer will be spending three days on the roof of the station, collecting donations from the public. The tradition stems from a national initiative, with firefighters across Canada supporting Muscular Dystrophy Canada for over 70 years.
The partnership between the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) began in 1954, demonstrating a long-held commitment to supporting individuals and families facing the challenges of muscular dystrophy. The “Fill the Boot” program, a cornerstone of this partnership, allows firefighters to collect donations one dollar at a time, making a significant collective impact.
More Than Just a Fundraiser: Building Community and Raising Awareness
The Rooftop Campout isn’t simply about raising money; it’s about raising awareness and fostering a sense of community. Motorists are encouraged to visit the station’s front parking lot to contribute to the cause, and residents are welcome to stop by throughout the weekend to show their support.
Last year, the Medicine Hat firefighters raised $13,348 for muscular dystrophy through the rooftop campout. The funds raised support community medical care programs, services, and facilities, as well as providing compassionate support to those facing traumatic injuries, medical emergencies, or chronic diseases.
Understanding Muscular Dystrophy
Muscular dystrophy (MD) encompasses a group of genetic diseases that cause progressive weakness and degeneration of skeletal muscles. Firefighters recognize the profound impact these diseases have on individuals and families, and their dedication to fundraising reflects a deep understanding of the challenges involved.
