JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida Ospreys men’s tennis team suffered a narrow 4-3 defeat at the hands of Mercer University on Saturday at the UNF Tennis Complex. Despite a spirited comeback attempt, the Ospreys ultimately fell short against a tough Bears squad.

Early Struggles in Doubles Play

Mercer gained an early advantage by securing the doubles point. Riccardo Ciulli and Joao Portugal managed a 6-3 victory on court three, marking Ciulli’s first collegiate dual doubles win. However, Mercer claimed wins on courts one and two, ultimately taking the initial point.

Mercer Builds a Lead in Singles

The Bears continued their momentum into singles play, winning on courts three and two to establish a commanding 3-0 lead. Youssef Labbene fell in straight sets, while Joao Portugal too faced defeat.

Ospreys Mount a Resilient Comeback

North Florida refused to concede, launching a determined comeback. Freshman Aron Major delivered a dominant performance on court six, winning 6-4, 6-1. This victory improved Major’s overall record to 8-1 and maintained his perfect 5-0 record at the number six position.

Riccardo Ciulli then battled to a 7-6(6), 6-4 win on court five, followed by a 6-4, 7-5 victory for Kyle Piqueras on court four, leveling the score at 3-3.

Mercer Clinches the Match

The comeback ultimately fell short as Mercer secured the decisive point on court one in a three-set match, clinching the 4-3 victory. Andreas Scott fought hard but was unable to overcome his opponent.
