Miranda Hart reflects on chronic illness on The Celebrity Traitors

In a column for Digital Spy, editor Shaun reported that Miranda Hart has emerged as a breakout favourite on The Celebrity Traitors, positioning herself as the castle’s resident Miss Marple and a successful Traitor catcher. During the 16 October broadcast of the BBC One game show, the sitcom icon reflected on her years of long-term ill health while tackling a physically demanding highland mission.

Miranda Hart Confronts Chronic Illness on National Television

The comedian spent years away from the spotlight after suffering a tick-borne illness while living in the United States as a teenager, according to Digital Spy. She never regained a normal level of energy, which ultimately led to a myalgic encephalomyelitis, or chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) diagnosis. Her root cause was not officially confirmed as Lyme disease until 2020, as reported by Digital Spy and the Mirror. According to the NHS, Lyme disease spreads to humans via infected ticks and typically responds best to early antibiotic treatment, though some patients experience lingering symptoms for years.

Before entering the BBC castle hosted by Claudia Winkleman, Hart told the BBC that her body relaxed and she wanted to jump about like a schoolgirl with joy upon receiving the invitation. The Mirror noted that the appearance marks her first mainstream television role in six years following her secret late-2024 marriage. While she still manages fatigue and pain from ME, she decided she felt well enough to take part in the physical games.

Emotional Highland Missions and the Departure of Joe Lycett

During the 16 October episode, Hart confessed to finding the strenuous outdoor games thrilling after years of severe physical limitation.

The Mirror detailed that following the banishment of fellow Faithful Joe Lycett, Hart broke down in tears, forming a close bond with him and fellow contestant James Acaster. Hart told the BBC that connection, laughter, and joy outweigh the game itself, noting that her time dealing with illness left her without those simple human interactions.
