Mr Motivator urges government to treat ’bed poverty’ as a national crisis | Poverty

by Rachel Morgan News Editor

A growing number of children in the UK are facing “bed poverty,” lacking a bed of their own, as demand for furniture assistance surges. Barnardo’s reported a nearly 40% increase in households seeking help with essential furniture – including beds – between the first quarter of 2025 and mid-March of this year.

Rising Concerns

The children’s charity states that beds are becoming “like a luxury item,” a situation exacerbated by the ongoing war in Iran and its potential to worsen cost of living pressures. In 2023, polling commissioned by Barnardo’s and YouGov found that 226,000 families in the UK had children sharing a bed due to financial hardship.

Did You Know? In the first quarter of 2025, 187 households accessed Barnardo’s services for essential furniture, rising to 261 households by mid-March 2026.

TV fitness coach Derrick Evans, known as Mr Motivator, is advocating for the government to recognize “bed poverty” as a national crisis and incorporate it into child poverty planning. He emphasized the significant consequences of lacking a proper bed, stating it impacts children’s health, mood, learning, behaviour and emotional stability.

The situation is impacting schools as well. Leon Evans, head of Year 7 at Canons High School in Edgware, north London, noted that students are arriving at school tired due to unstable housing situations and a lack of adequate sleep. He explained that consistent sleep is crucial for learning and that a lack of a secure place to sleep can hinder educational opportunities.

Expert Insight: The increasing prevalence of bed poverty highlights a deepening crisis in family affordability. The consequences extend beyond immediate comfort, impacting children’s development and educational outcomes, potentially creating long-term inequalities.

Mr Motivator has launched Mr Motivator’s Bed Bank to address the issue and a petition calling for formal government recognition. Barnardo’s is also working with Simba to provide bed bundles to families in need.

Government Response

The Department for Work and Pensions stated that the recent removal of the two-child limit for universal credit claimants, effective April 6th, is expected to help 450,000 children. The government is also expanding free school meals to all families on universal credit starting in the 2026 school year and plans to provide free breakfast clubs to 500,000 more children beginning this September. 1,000 Best Start family hubs will be established across England by 2028.
