New Year’s Day 2025: CDMX and Edomex Implement Contingency Plan – Double Hoy No Circula?

Breaking: CAMe Activates Phase 1 of Environmental Contingency in CDMX and EdoMex

In an alarming start to 2025, the capital and neighboring state have been declared under Phase 1 of Environmental Contingency, effective January 1. The Comisión Ambiental de la Megalópolis (CAMe) has confirmed that air pollution levels have surpassed critical limits, with particular PM2.5 concentrations reaching 100 micrograms per cubic meter at the Nezahualcóyotl station in the northeastern Valley of Mexico.

The primary culprit? Uncontrolled use of firecrackers and burning of materials during New Year’s celebrations. In response, CAMe has identified and implemented measures to contain the situation, with Phase 1 of the Environmental Contingency Plan now in effect.

Impacted Areas

The affected regions include Gustavo A. Madero Municipality in CDMX, along with municipalities in the State of Mexico such as Acolman, Atenco, Axapusco, and others.

Urgent Measures & Recommendations

To mitigate the situation, CAMe has implemented measures and issued recommendations for both industry and the general public:

  1. Industrial Measures:

    • Reduce emissions by 40%
    • Suspend activities of concreteras without emission control equipment
    • Stop activities related to brick, ceramic, and foundry combustion
    • Temporarily halt construction, development, demolition, and land movement activities, except in sanitized landfills
    • Suspend activities involving fossil fuel extraction
  2. Public Recommendations:
    • Work from home to reduce travel
    • Use air conditioning with the ‘recirculation’ option and keep doors/windows closed
    • Avoid indoor exposure to pollutants
    • Prioritize public transportation over private vehicles
    • Refrain from using chimneys

Moreover, residents are advised to:

  • Avoid outdoor activities during the day
  • Refrain from smoking, especially indoors

CAMe’s Commitment

CAMe has emphasized that these measures aim to minimize the population’s exposure to polluted air and reduce the risk of health complications, while also curtailing contaminant generation and lowering the risk of PM2.5 levels resurging.
