Marawi City – The Office of the Chief Minister’s Marawi Rehabilitation Program (OCM-MRP) began distributing one-time cash assistance of P5,000 to 1,500 high school students from internally displaced persons (IDP) families on Monday, February 9, 2026.

Supporting Education in Post-Conflict Marawi

The financial aid is intended to alleviate education-related expenses and encourage continued schooling for displaced learners as Marawi undergoes long-term rehabilitation. Initial distributions took place at the MRP management office, reaching 300 students, with remaining beneficiaries scheduled to receive assistance in the coming days.

Did You Know? The OCM-MRP has previously provided support to schools in Marawi, including the distribution of equipment and supplies to private schools, madaris (Islamic formal schools) and toril (Qur’an learning centers) affected by the 2017 siege.

Member of Parliament and MRP Program Manager Said Shiek emphasized the importance of education, stating, “As one of the mujahideen who fought for our rights for more than 40 years — and who will continue to fight for it for your (young generation) sake — I hope this small assistance will assist you, and future generations, in reaching your dreams.” Shiek also connected the initiative to broader regional progress, noting it “reflects the gains of peace and the moral governance we now enjoy in the region.”

Nor-Ashly Nader, a Grade 9 student and recipient of the aid, expressed gratitude, saying, “I am very grateful and honored to be one of the grantees. This support will help students like us to continue our education.”

Expanding Educational Support

According to MRP Supervising Head Engr. Abdulhanif Ondi, the program’s reach will extend beyond high school students. 1,500 qualified college-level IDP students are slated to receive P10,000 each this semester, following the completion of high school payouts. 1,500 qualified IDP educators are earmarked for P5,000 grants, and elementary-level IDP students will receive school supply kits at a later date.

Expert Insight: Providing targeted financial assistance to students and educators represents a strategic investment in Marawi’s future. Sustaining educational opportunities for displaced populations is crucial for long-term recovery and stability, and could contribute to breaking cycles of poverty and marginalization.

These efforts are part of the OCM-MRP’s overall mission to support internally displaced persons and prioritize education as a cornerstone of Marawi’s recovery and development.
