The Omaha Men’s Tennis team suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Northern Illinois on Sunday in DeKalb, Illinois. Despite a strong effort, the Mavericks (2-6) were unable to overcome an early deficit.
A Slow Start for Omaha
Northern Illinois (5-1) quickly gained the upper hand, winning the first three matches of the day. The Huskies secured victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches, and followed those up with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches.
Comeback Attempt Fueled by Freshmen and Juniors
Omaha began to mount a comeback thanks to wins from freshman Maddox Lundell and junior Christian Trevey. Lundell, of Minnetonka, Minnesota, defeated Iker Dellien in the No. 5 singles match, winning the first set 6-4 and dominating the second set with a score of 6-0. Trevey secured a point for Omaha in the No. 3 singles flight, winning a hard-fought match against Lorenzo Leti Messina 3-6, 6-3, and 7-6 (2) in a tiebreak.
The match was ultimately decided after wins by NIU in the No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles matches. The No. 6 singles match between Omaha’s Kaden Taylor and NIU’s Pratyaksh Lnu was left unfinished.
The Mavericks will return to their home court to host Saint Louis on Friday, February 20, at 12 p.m. CT at Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
