Three children died Friday afternoon after a recreational motorboat capsized and sank on Geneva Lake in Wisconsin during a severe storm. The Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency reported that six adults and one child were rescued from the water, while three children were recovered deceased following an intensive search.
How the Capsizing Occurred Near Big Foot Beach
A privately owned recreational boat carrying 10 people—six adults and four children—was overtaken by sudden, severe weather on Friday. According to TMJ4 News, the vessel was attempting to reach safety as conditions deteriorated when it was overwhelmed by waves and wind, took on water, and sank.
The rescue operation centered near Big Foot Beach. First responders, including the City of Lake Geneva police boat and the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency, successfully pulled seven people from the water. However, three children remained missing.
“During this time, we were informed that a boat had overturned on Geneva Lake, and there were people in the water. The city of Lake Geneva police boat, along with Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency, responded with their boats, and seven people were rescued from the water. Unfortunately, there were three fatalities of people who were not able to be rescued,”
Despite the tragedy, officials confirmed that all four children on the boat were wearing life jackets at the time of the capsizing. A source speaking to CBS News Chicago stated the three deceased victims are believed to be under the age of 13.
Regional Storm Damage and Emergency Response

The boat accident was one of many emergencies triggered by a severe weather system that swept through southeast Wisconsin and the Chicago area. The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office reported a massive surge in emergency activity, recording 769 911-calls and 269 non-emergency calls resulting from the storm.
The scale of the disruption extended beyond the lake:
- Infrastructure: The City of Lake Geneva declared a state of emergency, closing Donian Park, Oak Hill Cemetery, Flat Iron Park, and Library Park due to downed trees.
- Technical Rescues: Deputies responded to a barn collapse in Darien, rescuing an 83-year-old man, and a silo collapse in the town of Sharon that trapped two people.
- Power Outages: We Energies reported widespread outages, with the hardest-hit areas including Racine, Kenosha, Milwaukee, and Walworth counties.
- Traffic: A semi-truck trailer was blown over on US Highway 12 near Maclean Road.
The storm’s impact reached into Illinois, where ABC7 Chicago reported a Level 2 risk for severe weather. This resulted in over 200 canceled flights at O’Hare Airport and multiple vehicle accidents caused by falling trees in Evanston and Chicago’s Northwest Side.
Medical Strain and Investigation Details
The influx of storm-related injuries put a significant strain on regional healthcare. Walworth County Undersheriff Tom Hausner told TMJ4 News that local hospitals received such a high volume of patients that some facilities went on diversion.
The deaths of the three children are currently under a joint investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency. Authorities are withholding the identities of the victims pending notification of their families.
“This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly severe weather can develop on area waterways,”
Safety Warnings for Holiday Boaters
With the Fourth of July holiday occurring today, officials are using this tragedy to warn others about the volatility of lake conditions. The incident highlights a critical gap between receiving a warning and the arrival of dangerous conditions; Undersheriff Hausner noted that he received a storm warning on his own phone while at home, yet the boat was overwhelmed before it could find harbor.
“We strongly urge all boaters to closely monitor weather forecasts, remain vigilant of changing atmospheric conditions, and seek safe harbor immediately when threatening weather approaches.”
The danger was not limited to Lake Geneva. ABC7 Chicago reported that a kayaking trip on the DuPage River also took a dangerous turn Friday morning near Bolingbrook, where several kayaks overturned. While fire crews rescued five people and confirmed all 22 members of that group were safe, the event mirrored the volatility seen at Geneva Lake.
As the region recovers, the focus remains on the investigation into why a vessel with ten people, all of whom were reportedly using safety equipment, was unable to survive the storm’s onset.
