PH IT-BPM must adopt agentic AI platforms by 2027, says Mindsprint

The Philippine information technology-business process management industry must adopt specialized artificial intelligence agentic platforms by 2027 to protect its position as a global information technology-business process management (IT-BPM) hub, according to digital transformation solutions company Mindsprint Pty. Ltd. The sector, valued at $40 to $42 billion, currently stands as the second-largest business process outsourcing hub after India.

Transforming Outsourcing Models Through Agentic AI

Outsourcing workflows have historically relied on a linear increase in full-time equivalents to scale operations, such as deploying 100 workers to process one million invoices. Mindsprint CEO Suresh Sundararajan stated that the opportunity lies in building specialized platforms and solutions that transform the traditional business process outsourcing model into an outcome-based one. Speaking to BusinessWorld on Sept. 22, Mr. Sundararajan noted that a genuine marker of success by 2027 would involve Philippine providers bringing forward sector-specific offerings for health sciences, banking, financial services, insurance, telecom, and beyond. Under these frameworks, AI agents provide services for functions such as manufacturing, HR, finance, and procurement, with pricing based on consumption or results instead of staff numbers.

Did You Know? Mindsprint’s accounts payable platform SprintAP deploys nine AI agents to automate invoice scanning, processing, and payment, shifting commercial discussions toward volume and results.

Unlike legacy Robotic Process Automation tools that relied on rigid, rule-based execution within isolated functions, agentic AI systems utilize specialized digital agents to handle complex end-to-end tasks. Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan noted at a recent regional conference that the information technology and business process management sector generated more than $40 billion in revenue and employed 1.9 million workers last year. Secretary Balisacan emphasized that while the industry is a notable export success, it cannot raise productivity across the broader services economy by itself.

Workforce Readiness and the Shift to Strategic Roles

To manage this technological transition, workers must move from execution to strategic partnership. Mr. Sundararajan explained that Filipino professionals possess deep subject-matter knowledge acquired over decades in banking, financial services, healthcare, and telecommunications. According to Microsoft’s Work Trend Index, 25% of workers in the Philippines are considered “frontier professionals,” surpassing the global average of 16%, while the nation is 6th in the world for ChatGPT use, with 42.4% of internet users utilizing the tool.

While individual enthusiasm remains high and the digital economy grew by 20% to reach $31 billion in 2024, the Philippines still faces structural difficulties regarding governance readiness and technology infrastructure. The Philippines is ranked 56th out of 69 countries globally by the Oxford Government AI Readiness Index, placing it among the lowest of the major Southeast Asian economies. Secretary Balisacan also pointed out that services productivity only grew by 26 percent between 2006 and 2019, compared with 53 percent in manufacturing, and noted that improvements in digital connectivity, transport and logistics, financial services, and other business-support services remain necessary to raise productivity and help firms participate in regional and global value chains.

Addressing Security Protocols and Employee Trust

Sundararajan emphasized that a key element in building true trust in AI and reducing resistance is guaranteeing employees that the goal is not to cut jobs, but to empower them to transition into new roles with the support of the company.
