Finland Investigates Possible Sabotage in Estonia-Finland Power Cable Outage

Finland is probing a suspected breach in the Estlink 2 power cable connecting it to Estonia, Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo confirmed, according to Reuters. The incident, which occurred at 1:30 PM local time on Wednesday, left Finland without a crucial power supply route.

Fingrid, the Finnish state-owned transmission system operator, revealed the outage. Overseeing the country’s power grid, Fingrid is also tasked with ensuring energy security. "We cannot rule out the possibility of sabotage," Arto Pahkin, the company’s security chief, told Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

The Estlink 2 cable, a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) connection, plays a pivotal role in the Baltic power market. It’s one of the key links between Finland and the rest of the European power grid, facilitating secure and efficient electricity trade.

Finland, heavily reliant on imports for its energy needs, is taking the incident seriously. The investigation aims to establish the cause and ensure such incidents are prevented in the future. As the world’s energy landscape evolves, maintaining secure and reliable power supply has become a top priority for nations worldwide.
