French Students Deliver Powerful Road Safety Message with Student Film

A short film created by students at the Laval University Institute of Technology (IUT) is making waves in France, aiming to dramatically increase road safety awareness. Commissioned by the Mayenne Prefecture’s Road Safety Department, the nine-minute film utilizes a deeply emotional approach to highlight the dangers of risky driving behavior.

The Story Behind the Film: A Personal Tragedy

The project originated from Didier Barbé, a Departmental Road Safety Intervenor (IDSR) who was severely disabled after a 1999 road accident. Barbé’s personal story – a motorcycle collision with a car crossing a solid line with no visibility, resulting in the amputation of his left leg and arm – forms the core of the film’s impactful message. His desire to create a tool to sensitize drivers led to collaboration with the Prefecture.

IUT Laval Students Bring the Vision to Life

While the Road Safety Department had the concept, they lacked the multimedia expertise to produce the film. Here’s where the IUT Laval stepped in. A team of four students – Yaëlle COSSET, Niko BOYER, Léo LOINARD, and Ayman MOUHA HALHOUL – from the Bachelor University Technology (BUT) program in Multimedia and Internet Professions, took on the challenge. The collaboration is being described as a “win-win” situation, providing practical experience for the students and a vital resource for the Prefecture.

A Collaborative Production Process

The students emphasized the importance of a strategic initial phase, working closely with the commissioning parties to ensure a shared vision. Niko BOYER explained that interviewing Barbé, after initially viewing a court hearing where he presented his story, allowed them to capture the authenticity of his experience. Léo LOINARD noted the project required approximately 100 hours of work over four months, encompassing both filming and post-production. Yaëlle COSSET highlighted the adaptive nature of the process, allowing them to refine the message based on collected testimonials. Ayman MOUHA HALHOUL underscored the responsibility inherent in the project, emphasizing the importance of promoting responsible driving.

National Recognition for a Local Project

The film is scheduled to be presented during Road Safety Week, May 18-22, 2026. However, its potential impact extends beyond Mayenne. The Prefecture intends to submit the film to a national challenge, vying for the 2026 IDSR prize, recognizing its exceptional quality and message.

The Role of Educational Institutions in Road Safety

This project exemplifies a growing trend: the increasing involvement of educational institutions in addressing critical social issues like road safety. IUT Laval, a component of Le Mans University, offers four Bachelor University Technology programs, connecting students with real-world challenges and fostering practical skills. The university actively encourages collaboration with businesses, offering internships, projects, and training opportunities.

Pro Tip:

Consider partnering with local universities or technical schools for similar initiatives. Students often bring fresh perspectives and valuable skills to community projects.
