Puerto Rico’s Volleyball Legacy Honored: Class of 2026 Hall of Fame Inductees Announced
The Puerto Rican Volleyball Hall of Fame is set to enshrine 34 new members in a ceremony on Sunday, April 12th, at the John William Harris Theater of the University of Interamericana, Metropolitan Campus in San Juan. The event, beginning at 2:00 PM, marks a significant moment for the sport, particularly with the inclusion of beach volleyball pioneers.
A Historic Class: Beach Volleyball Takes Center Stage
This year’s class is particularly noteworthy as it opens the door for beach volleyball representation within the Hall of Fame. Arnaldo Sánchez, a pivotal figure in the development of the Norceca beach volleyball circuit and the Olympic qualification process used between the 2012 London and 2020 Japan Games, will be among those honored. Sánchez also holds the distinction of being the first Puerto Rican to serve on the International Federation’s Beach Commission and as President of the Norceca Beach Commission.
Joining Sánchez from the beach volleyball arena are Ángel ‘Cholo’ Peña, a prominent technical figure; Pedro ‘Pedruco’ García, the only Puerto Rican referee to officiate at two Olympic Games; Amaury Velasco, and Raúl Papaleo, both with experience in court volleyball.
Recognizing a Generation of Volleyball Stars
The Class of 2026 encompasses a wide range of talent and contributions to Puerto Rican volleyball. Honorees from the women’s game include Vilmarie Mojica, Tatiana Encarnación, Lourdes Isern, Leslie Ann De Jesús, Xaimara Colón, Alexandra Oquendo, Jessica Candelario, Jetzabel del Valle, Amanda Vázquez, Sheila Ocasio, Yamileska Polannie Yantín, and Sheila Conley.

Beyond the Players: Coaches, Officials, and Supporters
The Hall of Fame isn’t solely recognizing players. National team coaches Luis ‘Papo’ García and David Alemán will also be inducted, alongside referee Ernesto Ríos. Posthumous honors will be bestowed upon Pilar Marie Victoriá López, a former national team member, and Rosario Vega de Raíces, a long-time supporter of the Llaneras de Toa Baja team.
Looking Ahead: International Recognition for Puerto Rican Volleyball
Hall of Fame President Pedro Rodríguez emphasized the significance of this year’s class, stating it “reaffirms the legacy and evolution of this sport on the Island.” He also announced that George Mulry, Executive Director of the International Volleyball Hall of Fame (IVHF), will be in attendance. Discussions are underway to potentially nominate Ricky Amón for induction into the IVHF, which would produce him the first Puerto Rican to receive this honor.
