Family Camped Out in Los Angeles Hospital Room

Speaking with NBC special correspondent Maria Shriver on TODAY, Gayheart recalled leaving for a dinner event at the start of Dane’s final hospital stay without realizing the gravity of the situation. I said, ‘Listen, I’ll be back. I have a dinner. I’I’m going to this event,’ I had no idea that that was it, that that week was going to be our last week, she told NBC News, adding that neither she nor their daughters anticipated his death because hospital staff had previously stabilized him and sent him home (NBC News).

To comfort the actor during his final week, Gayheart and their daughters, 16-year-old Billie and 14-year-old Georgia, moved into his room. The girls and I just camped out there with him, and we had our family sleepovers, Gayheart said, noting they brought in battery-operated candles to create a familiar environment. After approximately three days, she said the tone of the medical discussions changed, and Dane made conscious choices about how he would leave (NBC News).

During the final weeks, friends who are doctors helped Gayheart handle decision fatigue, while Dane decided how he was going to leave. Gayheart noted that the teenager’s experience was hard to watch as Dane grew more alive mentally while losing his physical abilities.

Doctors Initially Reached a Misdiagnosis in 2024

Before confirming the terminal diagnosis in 2024, Dane experienced a prolonged search for answers after losing movement in his right hand. According to his memoir, specialists initially reached what he termed a diagnostic consensus of multifocal motor neuropathy, which he described as a rare autoimmune disorder causing extreme muscle weakness, and noted carried a treatment reported as 90 percent effective, Page Six reported.

When his symptoms failed to improve under that treatment, his medical team pursued further testing, including an electromyography (EMG) test, a lumbar puncture to extract spinal fluid, and brain scans. Dane characterized the confirmation as a death sentence comparable to a horror movie.

The timeline included visiting multiple hand specialists before seeing a neurologist and undergoing a battery of tests over a nine-month period. When informed of the potential illness, he experienced a severe reaction comparable to getting the wind knocked out of him.

Couple Stayed Married Past 2018 Divorce Filings

Dane and Gayheart married in 2004 and filed for divorce in 2018, but never finalized the paperwork, according to his memoir. After Dane received his diagnosis in San Francisco in 2024, Gayheart dismissed her divorce petition to support him as a partner and caregiver. In the memoir, Dane described her as his unwavering rock.

In his final chapter, titled The Last Today, Dane addressed his daughters directly with advice and reflections, writing, Fight, girls – and hold your heads high. Gayheart told USA Today that grief is not linear for the family, but expressed hope that readers will see Dane beyond his television role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy.
