Director Ranjith has been remanded in 14 days of judicial custody following his arrest in connection with a sexual harassment complaint filed by a young actress. Ranjith was arrested late last night from Thodupuzha, brought to Kochi early this morning, and presented before a magistrate, according to reports. He has been taken to the Town Sub Jail, with the remand period set to conclude on April 13th.
Defense Claims False Accusation, Delays in Filing Complaint
Ranjith’s legal team argued in a bail application that the allegations are false. They pointed out that the alleged incident occurred in January, but the complaint wasn’t filed until two months later. The defense also stated they would inform the court of Ranjith’s health condition during the bail hearing, scheduled for noon today. They further claimed procedural lapses in the arrest. However, investigators maintain they possess strong evidence against the director.
The complaint alleges that Ranjith attempted to sexually assault the actress inside his caravan on the film set in Fort Kochi. The actress stated she was subjected to sexual misconduct and required counseling due to the trauma. Ranjith remained silent when questioned by the media after being released from the police station, declining to comment on the validity of the allegations. He was arrested under non-bailable sections, and had been under police surveillance since yesterday morning.
Investigation Underway, Bail Hearing Today
Police confirmed the arrest was conducted meticulously, with no room for procedural errors. The Ernakulam City Police Commissioner directed the Thodupuzha Police to grab Ranjith into custody. The actress’s secret statement has also been recorded. Ranjith is currently in the custody of the Thodupuzha Police and will be handed over to the Kochi Police. DCP Aswathi Gigi is leading the investigation.

What’s Next?
The outcome of today’s bail hearing will be crucial. If granted bail, Ranjith’s legal team will likely focus on challenging the evidence presented by the prosecution. If denied bail, he will remain in custody pending further investigation. The case has already sparked considerable discussion within the Malayalam film industry and beyond, raising questions about workplace safety and accountability.
Given the seriousness of the allegations and the ongoing investigation, will this case lead to broader conversations about safeguarding actors and crew members within the Malayalam film industry?
