FARGO — North Dakota State University will have a new interim leader next month. The State Board of Higher Education on Thursday, Jan. 22, appointed businessman and former Congressman Rick Berg to succeed President David Cook, who is departing for a new role at Iowa State University.

Berg, 66, will serve as interim president while the board conducts a search for a permanent replacement for Cook, who has led NDSU since summer 2022. Board Chairman Kevin Black and Higher Ed Commissioner Brent Sanford will now negotiate the terms of Berg’s appointment.
Berg’s appointment follows Cook’s announcement that he will begin a new position as president of Iowa State University in Ames in March. Cook’s last day at NDSU is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 8, though he will remain available in an advisory role through the end of that month.
Berg’s Background
Berg is a well-known figure in North Dakota politics. He served as a U.S. Representative from 2011 to 2013 and previously held leadership positions in the North Dakota Legislature for 26 years, including Speaker of the House and Majority Leader. He also chaired the North Dakota Republican Party from 2018 to 2020.
