Pittsburgh, PA – The United Steelworkers (USW) union today inaugurated Roxanne Brown as its new International President, marking a historic moment as the 10th leader of North America’s largest industrial union since its founding in 1942.
A Historic Transition
Brown, elected last fall, succeeds David McCall, who did not seek reelection after serving as International President since September 2023. With this appointment, Brown becomes the first woman and the first person of color to lead the USW, which represents 850,000 workers across diverse industries.
The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Sheraton Hotel ballroom in Pittsburgh’s Station Square, was attended by approximately 1,000 USW members and guests. Brown addressed the crowd, stating, “Working people are at a crossroads in this country,” and emphasizing the need for the labor movement to “organize, to educate, and to lead the fight for real economic justice.”
New Leadership Team
Alongside Brown, Amber Miller was sworn in as an international vice president, having previously directed the union’s Rapid Response program since 2019. Also taking office for four-year terms were Myles Sullivan as International Secretary-Treasurer, Marty Warren as National Director for Canada, and International Vice Presidents Emil Ramirez, Kevin Mapp, and Luis Mendoza.
Twelve district directors also began new terms, including Donnie Blatt (District 1), Scott Lunny (District 3), David M. Wasiura (District 4), Nicolas Lapierre (District 5), Kevon Stewart (District 6), Michael R. Millsap (District 7), Larry Ray (District 8), Daniel Flippo (District 9), Bernie Hall (District 10), Cathy Drummond (District 11), Gaylan Z. Prescott (District 12), and Larry Burchfield (District 13).
David McCall, who chose not to seek reelection, expressed his confidence in Brown’s ability to lead the union, stating she brings “integrity, skill, knowledge, toughness and empathy to the job.”
