Ukraine‘s Presidential Office Deems Talks with Russia "Inevitable"
The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged the necessity of negotiations with Russia, with a top aide describing them as an "inevitability." This assertion was made by Sergey Lechenko, an advisor to Zelensky, on December 23, as reported by the Russian news agency Tass.
Ukraine’s Stance on Talks with Russia
In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Kyiv appears to be softening its stance on talks with Moscow. Lechenko stated unequivocally, "We understand that negotiations are inevitable."
However, Ukraine’s representative was quick to underscore the importance of strength in these discussions. "Ukraine must be strong in these negotiations," Lechenko asserted, suggesting that the nation is well-aware of the uphill battle it faces in dealing with its eastern neighbor.
The advisor also emphasized the need for Ukraine to be prepared for talks, citing the political shifts occurring in the United States. Lechenko reminded that the incoming U.S. President, Donald Trump, had previously expressed a desire to broker peace in the ongoing conflict.
Assertively, Lechenko dismissed theqi possibility of resuming negotiations in either Minsk or Istanbul, the locations of previous Russia-Ukraine negotiations.
Russia’s Stance on Resolution
In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined several conditions for a resolution, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donetsk and Luhansk, abandonment of NATO aspirations, recognition of the rights of Russian-speakers, and the lifting of economic sanctions against Russia.
