Salem MA: Host Japanese Students – Cultural Exchange Program 2026

by Chief Editor

The City of Salem is preparing to welcome 28 middle school students from its sister city, Ota-ka in Tokyo, Japan, from July 26th to August 3rd. The Salem-Ota Cultural Exchange is currently seeking volunteer host families for the visiting students, a tradition spanning more than 30 years.

A Longstanding Cultural Connection

For over three decades, Salem and Ota have maintained a strong cultural relationship. Each year, the Ota City Department of Education sends students, aged 13-14, to Salem for a week of English language learning and cultural immersion. Students reside with host families on the North Shore, fostering lasting friendships and connections.

Did You Know? The official sister-city relationship between Salem and Ota began in 1991, building upon a century-old connection between Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum and the Ota Folk Museum.

This year holds particular significance as Salem and Ota will celebrate 35 years as sister cities in 2026. The visiting students will also participate in Salem’s 400+ Anniversary/Heritage Day Parade on August 1st.

Host Family Requirements

Families interested in hosting a student do not need to speak Japanese, as the students possess basic English proficiency. While students require their own bed, sharing a bedroom is acceptable. Host families are asked to offer a glimpse into everyday life in Salem, and are not expected to plan elaborate activities. A key requirement is that host families already have children in the home, ideally between the ages of 10 and 16.

Expert Insight: Long-term sister-city relationships like the one between Salem and Ota are vital for fostering global understanding. These exchanges aren’t simply about tourism; they build personal connections that can positively influence international relations and broaden perspectives for both students and host families.

Over 800 Japanese students have been hosted by Salem families in the past three decades, and more than 120 American students have visited Japan through the exchange program.
