A San Antonio family of eight – including six children and two dogs – escaped a house fire Saturday morning, but now face the challenge of rebuilding their lives after losing nearly all of their possessions.
Family Escapes East Side House Fire
The fire broke out at the family’s home on Gibbs Street near Walters Street, with video captured by a neighbor showing flames engulfing the structure. Melony Salinas, the mother, described feeling “beyond blessed” that everyone made it out safely.
The fire began while her husband was working on his car, quickly spreading to the house. He immediately alerted the family, urging them to evacuate. The family fled with only the clothes they were wearing, and some were even without shoes.
During the evacuation, Salinas realized her 5-year-vintage son was missing. The family immediately re-entered the burning home and located him in one of the back rooms, bringing him to safety. Moments later, they discovered their two dogs were still inside.
Salinas’ husband bravely ran back into the house and rescued the dogs, emerging with one in each arm before collapsing due to smoke inhalation. Neighbors pulled him to safety, and he was later released from a hospital.
While the family is grateful for their survival, they have lost nearly everything. “Clothes for the kids, furniture whenever we acquire there, wherever we’re going — basically everything. It’s like starting all over again,” Salinas said.
The family has established a GoFundMe page to solicit support as they begin to rebuild. Salinas also expressed the emotional toll the event has taken, stating, “I feel like it traumatized my kids.”
Despite the devastation, Salinas remains focused on gratitude and expressed thanks for the support received from neighbors and strangers.
