Special Train to Mainz: Czech Railways Adapts to Fan Travel Demands

Czech Railways (ČD) is demonstrating its flexibility by operating a special 14-car train, dubbed the “Modrobílý expres” (Blue and White Express), to transport approximately 750 fans of the SK Sigma Olomouc football club to Mainz, Germany, for a Conference League match. But, the journey isn’t without its adjustments.

Route Change and Limited Amenities

Originally planned to take a northern route, the train will now travel south, including a stop in Prague. This change is due to the traffic situation in Germany. Passengers should be prepared for a long journey with limited comfort. The train consists of older carriages, sometimes referred to as “koženky” (leatherettes) due to their original seat coverings, which are drawn from reserve stock.

Only one carriage on the train, number 3, will have electrical outlets available. Catering services have been cancelled. Passengers are advised to bring sufficient food, drinks, and power banks for their devices.

Locomotive Details and Cross-Border Operations

The train will be powered by a Siemens Vectron electric locomotive for the electrified sections of the route. A Länderbahn Class 223 diesel locomotive will be added for the non-electrified portions. ČD is the primary operator within the Czech Republic, even as TrainLog will handle operations within Germany, ensuring compliance with local regulations.

Revised Departure and Travel Information

Due to technical issues, the train’s departure from Olomouc main station has been delayed to 10:33 PM. The train will pass through Zábřeh na Moravě and Prague main station (arriving at 1:15 AM) before continuing to Mainz. Fans are expected to arrive in Mainz around noon on Thursday. The return journey is scheduled to depart around 11 PM, contingent on the match’s outcome.

Sigma Olomouc’s European Run

SK Sigma Olomouc qualified for the Conference League after winning the previous year’s domestic cup. They overcame Lausanne-Sport in the play-off round, winning 2-1 away after a 1-1 draw at home, securing their place in the round of 16 against Mainz. The first leg in Olomouc ended in a 0-0 draw.
