Slovakia’s Unexpected Olympic Hockey Run: A Golden Opportunity?
Former Slovak hockey representative Ladislav Nagy believes the current Slovak team has the potential to reach the final at the 2026 Winter Olympics. This optimistic outlook follows a strong performance, including a quarter-final victory over Germany with a decisive 6-2 score.
Nagy, witnessing the quarter-final match firsthand alongside his son, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to contend for a gold medal. Their journey began with a win against Finland, followed by a hard-fought victory over Italy and a successful match against Sweden.
Dominating Performance and Tactical Strength
“The boys deserved it,” Nagy stated to TASR. “They started the Olympics with a win over Finland, then overcame a tough match against Italy. They handled Sweden well and deservedly beat Germany. They didn’t give Germany anything; they didn’t have many chances.”
Nagy highlighted Slovakia’s strong defensive play and control of the mid-ice, emphasizing their ability to maintain a consistent performance throughout the game. He believes a gold medal is within reach, calling it an “incredible” possibility.
Revenge Served: A Sweet Victory Over Germany
The victory over Germany holds particular significance for Nagy, as he previously played against them during the 2019 World Championship. In that match, Germany defeated Slovakia 3-2 in the final seconds, effectively ending their hopes for a quarter-final berth.
“I remember that game. We practically gave it away ourselves, leading 2-1 with a minute and a half left, only to concede two goals in 30 seconds. We were playing well as a team, but it didn’t work out. Now, we’ve returned the favor to Germany with interest, and I’m happy for the boys.”
NHL Prospects and Future Potential
Nagy believes the strong performance at the Olympics could open doors for several Slovak players to receive offers from NHL teams. Players like Miloš Kelemen and Oliver Okuliar have demonstrated their potential, and Samuel Hlavaj is on the cusp of making a move to the NHL.
“Definitely yes,” Nagy said. “Kelemen played excellently against Germany, as did Regenda. Okuliar is likewise playing exceptionally well. Kelemen was in Phoenix, and I was there at the time. There will certainly be another opportunity, and if they receive an offer, they will try it. Everyone wants to play in the NHL, everyone wants to get there. That’s where the best players in the world are, and it’s good that Slovak hockey has shown itself again.”
He hopes increased exposure will lead to more Slovak players being drafted into the NHL, bringing the number closer to the 40 players Slovakia once had in the league.
Analyzing Top Talent: McDavid and MacKinnon
Nagy also observed Canada’s game, noting the dynamic partnership between Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon, two of the NHL’s leading scorers. He praised their exceptional playmaking abilities and the unique style of their passing.
“McDavid was playing with Celebrini and Wilson at first, then the coach place MacKinnon on the line and kept it that way. It’s incredible how they pass to each other. It’s different from how Europeans pass; it’s beautiful to watch. I played against MacKinnon, he’s like a tank, it’s hard to accept the puck from him. And McDavid is a player from another planet. I don’t know what to say, he’s incredible.”
