Political Earthquake in South Korea: Song Young-gil’s Return and the Shifting Landscape of the Gyeonggi-eul By-Election

The political scene in South Korea is experiencing significant upheaval following the acquittal of Song Young-gil, leader of the Somin Party, in an appellate court. This ruling has sent ripples through the political landscape, particularly concerning the upcoming Gyeonggi-eul by-election, and prompted Song to announce his intention to rejoin the Democratic Party.

Acquittal and Return to the Democratic Party

On February 13th, the Seoul High Court’s Criminal Division 1 acquitted Song Young-gil of charges including bribery and violations of the Political Funds and Election Laws. Following the verdict, Song announced on his Facebook page his decision to disband the Somin Party and return to the Democratic Party. He explained his initial departure three years prior was to alleviate pressure on then-party leader Lee Jae-myung and the Democratic Party amidst the allegations.

Warm Welcome and Calls for a Return to Gyeonggi-eul

Song’s decision to rejoin the Democratic Party has been met with widespread support from within the party. Park Chan-dae, a Democratic Party lawmaker, highlighted Song’s unwavering support for Lee Jae-myung during the 2022 presidential election. Other figures, including Heo Jong-sik, a Democratic Party lawmaker, have publicly urged Song to contest the Gyeonggi-eul by-election, emphasizing his previous sacrifice of the seat to support Lee Jae-myung.

The Potential Impact on the By-Election

The upcoming June 3rd by-election in Gyeonggi-eul is now poised for a dramatic shift. Previously, Kim Nam-joon, President’s Office spokesperson, was considered a strong potential candidate for the Democratic Party, given the constituency was formerly held by President Lee Jae-myung. However, Song Young-gil’s return complicates this scenario. The Democratic Party may face internal resistance to nominating a presidential aide in a district where Song is perceived to have yielded his position to support Lee Jae-myung.

Regional Sentiment and Potential Challenges

A local political source noted that a significant portion of party members in the region recognize Song’s past concession of the Gyeonggi-eul seat. This could create internal opposition if another candidate is selected. However, the source also cautioned that voters will ultimately base their decisions on issues of livelihood and regional development, rather than solely on symbolic gestures. Success will depend on addressing these concerns effectively.

A Strengthening of the “Lee Jae-myung Era”?

Several political observers believe Song Young-gil’s return solidifies the position of Lee Jae-myung within the Democratic Party. Supporters are framing Song’s return as a crucial step in safeguarding the “Lee Jae-myung era” and fostering development in Gyeonggi province.
