A former veterinarian, Jon Ruben, has admitted to drugging his wife with Temazapam so she would be unable to intervene while he sexually assaulted children. This admission comes after he previously pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two boys and inflicting child cruelty on six others at a summer camp in Stathern, Leicestershire.
Details of the Case
Ruben, 76, entered his guilty plea at Leicester Crown Court on Wednesday, stating “I’m so sorry.” The court heard that Ruben administered the drug to his wife, Susan Ruben, between July 26 and 29 of last year. He had previously laced sweets with tranquillising drugs and then sexually assaulted two children after engaging them in what was described as “a sweet game.”
Police were alerted after eight children were hospitalized on July 27 following reports of illness. Investigators found liquid Xanax had been used on some of the victims. Ruben was found at a nearby pub with some of the children when police arrived and subsequently arrested.
In November, Ruben pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges, including sexual assault of a child under 13, assault of a child under 13 by penetration, eight counts of child cruelty, three counts of making indecent images of children, and four drug charges. The indecent images charges involved 50 category A videos, 22 category B videos, and seven category C videos, created between August 2023 and June last year, but none involved children from the summer camp.
Judge Timothy Spencer KC warned Ruben that his sentencing, scheduled for Friday, would be “a very tough day in your life.” Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Neil Holden emphasized the focus remains on supporting the young victims and ensuring their ongoing safety.
