Roger Williams Swimming Gears Up for NJAC Championships

The Roger Williams University Men’s and Women’s Swimming teams are poised to compete in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Swimming and Diving Championships, beginning Thursday in Hampton, Virginia. The competition marks a key moment for both teams, with the men aiming to improve upon their fifth-place finish from the previous two seasons, and the women looking to climb from seventh and eighth place finishes.

Championship Schedule and Key Events

The NJAC Championship kicks off on February 12th with the men’s 3-meter diving preliminaries at 4:30 PM. The opening night will conclude with the finals for the women’s and men’s 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay.

Friday’s events begin at 9:30 AM, featuring preliminary races in the 50-yard and 500-yard freestyles, and the 200-yard individual medley. The afternoon session will showcase the finals for these events, alongside the 400-yard medley relay.

Saturday’s schedule includes preliminary races for the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, and 100-yard backstroke, culminating in finals later in the day. Sunday will wrap up the championship with races in the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 400-yard freestyle relay, and the 1650-yard freestyle.

Hawks to Watch

James Augustin is a key competitor for the men’s team, seeded eighth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.01, and also ranked within the top ten for the 100 freestyle (46.01). Avery Benigni will lead the women’s team in the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 24.91.

Luke Austin is positioned tenth in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.64), while Milo Stefanowicz is twelfth (2:07.00). For the women, Mattia McIntyre is expected to perform strongly in the 100 breaststroke. Claire Dombrofski will be a leading swimmer for the Hawks in the 100 freestyle, and Shae Gonzales will compete in the 200 backstroke.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are ranked within the top ten for the 200-yard freestyle relays, holding seventh place.
