Zirkus FahrAwaY Brings Contemporary Circus Production to Riga
Swiss contemporary circus company Zirkus FahrAwaY is presenting its production titled Zilonis at Rīgas cirks, Diena reported. The touring troupe, established in the spring of 2010, uses humor and nostalgia to explore the passage of time in life and the circus.
Rīgas cirks creative director Mārtiņš Ķibers noted the performance features aerial acrobatics, juggling, and live music played directly by the artists. He added that the Swiss troupe maintains a distinct artistic style that separates them from practitioners in traditional circus strongholds like France and Belgium.
Swiss Touring Troupe Constructs Its Own Set Elements
The collective’s members specialize across multiple disciplines, including trapeze, diabolo, stage arts, music, metalworking, and carpentry. Valentīns Šteinemans, one of the founders of Zirkus FahrAwaY, stated that the artists handle all stages of production themselves.
“We build, saw, paint, clean and repair – including in front of the spectators’ eyes,” Šteinemans said, according to Diena. The artists constructed most of the scenography and several musical instruments by hand, alongside restoring the historic circus wagon used for their tours.
Zirkus FahrAwaY has performed at European contemporary circus festivals and toured Swiss towns using their own tent. In the autumn of 2026, the association received the Swiss Federal Office of Culture award in the visual arts sector.
Upcoming Performances at Rīgas cirks
The performance takes place against the backdrop of La Nuit du Cirque, an international event held in mid-November that encompasses more than 250 circus events across at least 18 countries, including Latvia.
Following the current programming, Rīgas cirks will host Darja Turčenko’s dance performance titled Cik spējam mēs viens būt tālu no otra, executed by the SIXTH dance company on November 25. The venue’s winter schedule continues with the production Ziemassvētku dzīres cirkā, running from December 18 to mid-January. Ticket information is available through Bezrindas.
