The Global Running Boom Drives Record Demand for Start Slots
Demand for marathon entries has surged across Europe and the world. Major races in London, New York, and Berlin sell out almost instantly. In Copenhagen, organizers implemented a lottery system after more than 80,000 runners registered for a chance to secure a spot for the 2027 event.
Sweden experiences the exact same trend. Stockholm Marathon, which typically runs from late May to early June, has recorded a steady increase in participation since organizers welcomed runners back following pandemic-related disruptions. The 25,000 available slots for the upcoming Stockholm race sold out in November last year. The 2027 Stockholm event filled up completely by August, forcing organizers to release extra slots in September that sold out immediately.
Täby IS Targets Expansion With 2027 Marathon Launch
Täby Halvmarathon and the associated Lilla Täbymaran currently draw more than 3,000 runners to Näsby Slott on October 18. Building on this established field, organizing club Täby IS wants to scale up both the participant numbers and the race distances.
The club’s long-term vision is to gather 10,000 runners across its marathon and half-marathon distances at the same event, eventually challenging Stockholm Marathon. Registration for the new Täby Marathon will open during the half-marathon event in October.
Strategic Timing Aims to Capture Disappointed Runners
Securing a spot in Sweden’s capital race is becoming as difficult as getting into continental majors. Nils-Göran Nilsson from Täby IS explained the rationale behind the new launch.
“Attaining start tickets for Stockholm Marathon will soon be just as challenging as in Berlin and London,” Nilsson said. “This means many runners who want to run a marathon in the capital will not get the opportunity, just like the situation on the continent. Therefore, we want to provide an alternative during a season that is additionally much better for running faster times.”
