“Dark Chocolate: A New Weapon Against Coronavirus?
Tempting as it may be to reach for that candy bar in times of stress, researchers haveretereted a surprising possible benefit of dark chocolate beyond just a quick sugar fix. A team from the Voice of America (VOA) reports that a study published in the journal npj Quantum Materials suggests dark chocolate may have antiviral properties that could potentially combat the coronavirus.
The study’s authors, led by Dr. Michael Famita, examined the cacao pod in its early stages of development, finding that it produces a substance called theobromine. This compound, they discovered, can effectively inhibit the growth of coronaviruses in a laboratory setting.
“Theobromine has shown promising results in our initial tests,” Famita told VOA. “It seems to interfere with the way the coronavirus reproduces, stopping it from spreading.”
While these findings are encouraging, it’s essential to remember that the research is still in its early stages. So far, no studies have been conducted on humans, and experts advise against relying solely on dark chocolate as a prevention or treatment method for COVID-19.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, reminds us, “While a few squares of dark chocolate might not hurt, it’s no substitute for proven protective measures like wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and getting vaccinated when it’s your turn.”
In the meantime, adding dark chocolate to your diet can still offer numerous health benefits. It’s rich in antioxidants and can help lower blood pressure, improve heart health, and enhance brain function. Just remember to enjoy it in moderation, as it’s also high in calories and sugar.
So, while the jury’s still out on whether dark chocolate is the new superfood fighting COVID-19, it’s undeniable that treating yourself to a small piece can provide some comfort and satisfaction during these trying times.”
