Poland Offers to Boost Power Exports to Ukraine Amid Tensions with Slovakia over Gas Transit
Battling for Ukraine’s energy security involves more than just gas pipelines. As a storm brews over Russia’s gas transit through Ukraine, Poland has stepped up, offering to increase power exports to its eastern neighbor if Slovakia follows through on its threat to cut off Ukrainian supply.
Polish officials, cited by Bloomberg and later echoed by "European Truth," insist they’re ready to beef up domestic power production to balance any instability in Ukraine’s energy grid. This move comes on the heels of Slovakia’s prime minister, Robert Fiaco, threatening to halt power exports to Ukraine if necessary.
The dispute between Ukraine and Slovakia is tied to the former’s refusal to renew its gas transit agreement with Russia after 2024. Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has made his position clear: Ukraine will not revive its pact with "Gazprom" and will not route Russian gas as Azeri.
Against this backdrop, Fiaco made waves by visiting Russia and engaging with President Vladimir Putin. But Poland isn’t wavering in its support for Ukraine’s energy needs.
