NUSA DUA, INDONESIA – Ayodya Resort Bali has launched a new sustainability initiative, PlasticShreds, in partnership with Diversey Indonesia, a Solenis company. The program aims to address plastic pollution and promote eco-friendly tourism on the island.

Transforming Waste into Resources

PlasticShreds focuses on collecting single-use plastics from guests and visitors at a dedicated beachfront collection point. These discarded materials are then transformed into durable, eco-friendly products like gravel, building blocks, and home décor, demonstrating a circular economy approach to waste management.

Did You Know? Indonesia is the world’s second-largest contributor to ocean plastic waste, generating an estimated 3.2 million tons annually.

The Scale of the Problem in Bali

The initiative comes as Bali faces a significant plastic pollution challenge. According to data from 2021, approximately 480,000 tons of single-use plastic waste are produced on the island each year, threatening marine biodiversity, tourism, and local livelihoods.

“At Ayodya Resort Bali, sustainability is our responsibility,” said Vineet Mahajan, General Manager of Ayodya Resort Bali. “Through our partnership with Diversey and PlasticShreds, we are taking real action to protect Bali’s oceans and future generations.”

Expert Insight: The PlasticShreds initiative represents a growing trend in the hospitality industry to actively address environmental concerns and engage guests in responsible tourism. By turning waste into usable materials, Ayodya Resort Bali is not only reducing its environmental footprint but also creating a tangible demonstration of sustainability.

Deepak Sahni, Marketing & GSA Director – Southeast Asia, Diversey – A Solenis Company, added, “Sustainability is a shared journey…This initiative is more than recycling—it is an act of hope and restoration.”

Ayodya Resort Bali has also eliminated all single-use plastics from the resort itself, including water bottles and in-room amenities, further solidifying its commitment to environmental stewardship.

What Could Happen Next

If successful, the PlasticShreds program could be expanded to other resorts and communities across Bali, potentially creating a wider network for plastic waste collection and transformation. It is also possible that the eco-friendly materials produced through the initiative could be used in local construction projects, further reducing reliance on traditional materials. The program’s success may also encourage other businesses to adopt similar circular economy practices.
