Băsescu Slams Dan’s Strategy: ‘Quit the Political Games’-His Proposed Premier Solution

Former Romanian President Traian Băsescu has criticized current head of state Nicușor Dan for his handling of government formation consultations. According to Băsescu, the refusal to engage with all parliamentary factions—including AUR—violates democratic norms and exacerbates the ongoing institutional deadlock. The former leader argues that prioritizing partisan interests over stability is preventing the appointment of a functional cabinet.

Strategic Errors in Presidential Consultations

Traian Băsescu identifies the exclusion of specific political parties from the consultation process at Cotroceni Palace as a primary tactical failure. Speaking to România TV, the former president emphasized that representative democracy requires acknowledging all forces elected by the public, regardless of their ideological standing.

“AUR must be invited to discussions,” Băsescu stated. “They won votes in the elections. You cannot exclude 20% of the electorate.” He highlighted a contradiction in current political behavior, noting that while nationalist-extremist parties were previously called to consultations, they were not put into the Government. According to Băsescu, this inconsistency undermines the legitimacy of the consultation phase.

The Conflict Between Pragmatism and Political Values

Băsescu’s analysis characterizes the current legislative impasse as a result of “cynical pragmatism.” He argues that political parties, particularly within the progressive camp, are operating without clear national values, focusing instead on internal power consolidation. This lack of cohesion is, in his view, the primary reason the country remains without a stable government.

The former president urged Nicușor Dan to cease personal involvement in the tactical maneuvering and instead fulfill his duty. He noted that multiple proposals are already on the table, including candidates from PNL – UDMR – USR, Mureșan and PSD with Grindeanu. By refusing to finalize a nomination, Băsescu contends that the current presidency is prioritizing “games” over the functional needs of the state.

Mathematical Realities of Government Formation

When assessing potential paths to a stable government, Băsescu suggests that the proposal put forward by the Liberals (PNL) holds the highest likelihood of passing a parliamentary vote. He points to a willingness among opposition forces to prioritize the end of the interim period over individual or party pride.

OUTSIDER POLITIC #5. Traian Băsescu: „Nicușor Dan e un președinte care nu poate servi țara”

According to the former president, the nomination of Mureșan could secure the necessary support from the PSD, as the party appears motivated to resolve the current crisis. The key takeaway from his assessment is that political flexibility—specifically the ability to move past the current “hunger for power”—is the only variable that will allow for a functioning cabinet to be formed.
