Residents of a block of flats in Plymouth were forced to evacuate their homes in the early hours of Thursday morning, April 30, after a massive fire broke out at the property.

Emergency Response at North Hill

The blaze occurred at a building located just off North Hill. Flames were reported pouring from the structure, prompting an immediate response from the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

Initial reports led to the deployment of three fire engines and an aerial ladder platform. Upon arrival, crews identified a large fire on a roof terrace and requested additional support.

A total of six fire engines and a command support unit were eventually utilized to tackle the blaze. Crews from Plymstock, Crownhill, Greenbank, Camels Head, Plympton, and Totnes were all involved in the operation.

Did You Recognize? To extinguish the fire, crews utilized specialized equipment including four breathing apparatus, two thermal image cameras, two safety jets, and two hose reel jets.

Damage and Cause

The fire was concentrated on a communal decking area of the roof terrace. The fire service confirmed that this specific area was totally destroyed by the flames.

Following an assessment, the cause of the fire was deemed accidental.

Expert Insight: The rapid escalation of a fire on a communal roof terrace highlights the critical importance of aerial ladder platforms in residential emergencies. When flames are visible from the sky, the ability to tackle the blaze from height is often the deciding factor in preventing a total building loss.

Potential Next Steps

Given that the communal decking area was completely destroyed, the building management may need to conduct structural assessments of the roof terrace.

Residents who were evacuated could face a period of displacement while the affected areas are made safe and repairs are carried out. It’s likely that safety inspections will be required before the communal spaces are reopened.
