Spike in Dengue Fever Cases: Indonesia Bracing for a Rise in 2025

The Dennis of dengue fever (DBF) in Indonesia are on the rise, with a disturbing trend observed over the past three years, prompting experts to warn of a potential surge in cases in early 2025. Aji Muhawarman, the Head of the Communication and Service Bureau at the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), shed light on this alarming issue, expressing concern about the increasing numbers.

The Hardest Hit: Young Adults and Children

The age group most affected by DBF in the past three years has been those aged between 15 and 44. However, when it comes to fatalities, children aged 5 to 14 have been the most vulnerable over the last seven years. "This is a serious issue that requires our immediate attention," Aji emphasized during a recent interview.

Kemenkes’ Strategic Plan

The Ministry of Health has a comprehensive national strategy to combat dengue fever, which includes:

  • Strengthening vector management with effective, safe, and sustainable measures,
  • Enhancing access and quality of dengue care services,
  • Intensifying dengue surveillance and management of confirmed cases,
  • Promoting sustained community involvement and engagement.

The Role of Technology and Prevention

Innovation and technology, such as Wolbachia-based interventions, are also being explored as part of the ministry’s strategy. Aji urged the public to stay vigilant and prioritize preventive measures by implementing the "3M plus" approach to avoid infection. He also advocated for vaccination as an additional means to tackle dengue fever.

Seek Immediate Medical Attention

Early detection and prompt treatment are crucial in saving lives, as many dengue-related deaths occur due to delayed medical intervention. Aji highlighted the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if a family member exhibits symptoms indicative of dengue fever.

Stay Ahead of the Curve

As we approach 2025, let us remains cautious and proactive in our efforts to curb the dengue epidemic. By working together, we can potentially mitigate the impact of the anticipated surge in cases and protect our loved ones.

Rising COVID-19 Cases in [Region]: Provincial Health Chief’s Urgent Advisory to Avoid Further Spread

by Chief Editor December 25, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Bengkulu Records 2,761 Dengue Fever Cases in 2024; 14 Fatalities Reported

Bengkulu, Indonesia – As of December 2024, the Bengkulu Provincial Health Office (Dinkes) has recorded a total of 2,761 cases of Dengue Fever (DF), a viral infection caused by the bite of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. According to the data collected through the Dengue Surveillance and Response System (SKDR) application, updated weekly, these cases include suspected, early symptom, and confirmed cases.

Ruslian SKM MSi, Head of the Prevention and Control of Diseases (P2P) Division at Dinkes Provinsi Bengkulu, explained that the data covers all reported cases from health facilities (faskes) spread across the province’s regencies and municipalities.

Regional Breakdown:

  • Mukomuko Regency tops the list with 544 cases, followed by Bengkulu Utara with 398 cases, and Rejang Lebong with 395 cases.
  • Kaur Regency has recorded 157 cases, Bengkulu Selatan 246, Seluma 316, Bengkulu City 254, Bengkulu Tengah 86, Kepahiang 193, and Lebong 173 cases.
  • Fatalities due to Dengue Fever in Bengkulu stand at 14, comprising 6 males and 8 females across various regions.

Response and Prevention Efforts:
Ruslian emphasized the importance of these data in monitoring the fluctuations of DF cases across the region. The SKDR application is designed to provide early warnings for communicable diseases that could potentially evolve into outbreaks.

Dinkes Provinsi Bengkulu has noted a consistent increase in DF cases weekly. In response, they closely monitor the situation and analyze data to determine appropriate next steps. The office carries out fogging operations when necessary, and also engages in public education and mosquito breeding source elimination using the 3M Plus method when fogging isn’t yet feasible.

Ruslian advises the public to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings, eliminating stagnant water that can breed mosquitoes. He also encourages people to adopt a healthy lifestyle through the National Health Movement (Gerakan Masyarakat Sehat – Germas).

Deadly Landslide in NTB: 7 Dead, Over 3,800 Affected

by Chief Editor December 23, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Breaking Records: Dengue Fever Cases Surge in Nusa Tenggara Barat

In a worrying trend, the Regional Health Agency (Dinas Kesehatan, Dinkes) of Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) has reported a sharp increase in dengue fever cases, with 3,848 confirmed cases from January to November 2024. Regrettably, seven lives have been lost to this preventable disease.

Lombok Barat leads the region with 913 cases, followed by Lombok Utara with 583 cases, Sumbawa Barat with 544 cases, and the capital city, Kota Mataram, with 530 cases. The fatalities, as outlined by Dinkes NTB Chief Lalu Hamzi Fikri, are equally distressing – three in Kota Mataram, two in Lombok Barat, one in Sumbawa Barat, and one in Kota Bima.

The surge in cases has raised concerns about NTB potentially reaching ‘exceptional event’ (Kejadian Luar Biasa, KLB) status for dengue fever. Experts attribute this increase to the current rainy season pattern, which provides favorable conditions for mosquito breeding.

Fikri has already issued a circular to all regencies and cities within NTB, urging immediate and coordinated action to prevent a full-blown epidemic. He warned that without prompt response, the situation could deteriorate rapidly.

Symptoms of dengue fever, often mistaken for the common flu, include severe headaches, joint pain, and fever. However, the most alarming stage is when the fever persists for 2-7 days. At this point, if not treated, dengue fever can progress to a severe form, making early detection crucial.

Dinkes NTB urges the public to remain vigilant, seek medical attention INITIALLY if these symptoms appear, and take necessary precautions to prevent mosquito breeding. Together, we can curb this preventable disease and safeguard our communities.

Deadly COVID-19 Surge: 3,848 New Cases and 7 Fatalities in NTB

Dengue Fever Cases Surge in Nusa Tenggara Barat

As of November 2024, the Health Agency of Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) Province has recorded a total of 3,848 dengue fever cases, with the highest numbers in Lombok Barat (913 cases), Lombok Utara (583 cases), Sumbawa Barat (544 cases), and Mataram (530 cases). Tragically, seven fatalities have been reported—a triad from Mataram and single fatalities each from Lombok Barat, Sumbawa Barat, and Bima.

Kepala Dinas Kesehatan Provinsi NTB, Lalu Hamzi Fikri, emphasized the importance of early detection in healthcare facilities like Puskesmas, clinics, and hospitals to manage dengue cases effectively. The distribution of RDT NS1 kits across all districts and cities is encouraging early diagnosis.

To prevent and control dengue fever, Fikri underscores the significance of promotional and preventative measures, including direct and indirect education via social media. Dinas Kesehatan Provinsi NTB has issued circular letters to each district and city, emphasizing dengue prevention and readiness for potential outbreaks.

Dengue fever is notoriously common during rainy seasons, with initial symptoms resembling the flu—aches, fever, severe headache, and nausea. High fever lasting two to seven days may follow. The primary prevention measures are maintaining clean and healthy habits (PHBS) and mosquito breeding site elimination (PSN) using the 3M Plus concept.

In anticipation of an impending dengue surge, the Health Agency distributed a Dengue Outbreak Readiness Letter to all district/city health departments in early February. They also provided logistical support, including insect repellents, larvicides, diagnostic tools (RDT NS1 Combo), and executed joint mosquito eradication efforts with Puskesmas and village communities.

Fikri urges everyone to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing dengue fever. If you experience symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
