An investigation has been launched by the Netherlands’ Inspectorate of Healthcare and Youth (IGJ) into the fatal stabbing of a 76-year-old woman near a psychiatric clinic in Den Dolder last week. The suspect, a patient at the clinic, was quickly apprehended and is cooperating with authorities.
The incident has sparked significant public concern, leading the IGJ to take over the investigation alongside the clinic’s operator, Fivoor. In a statement, Fivoor confirmed that they had contacted the IGJ soon after the incident and were conducting their own investigation. However, the IGJ stepped in due to the "extensive public turmoil" caused by the event.
This is not the first time that concerns have been raised about safety in Den Dolder. In 2017, a young woman, Anne Faber, was killed by a patient from the same clinic. The latest incident has reopened old wounds among local residents, with some calling for the clinic to leave the area.
The suspect in the recent stabbing case had previously been treated in the clinic for wielding a knife on random people in the Heerhugowaard region in 2022 or 2023. Instead of further prosecution, he was sentenced to involuntary treatment in Den Dolder.
Fivoor has agreed to prioritize the IGJ’s investigation to ensure the independence of its own probe. The investigation is expected to be completed within six months.
