An Alberta judge has approved a multimillion-dollar settlement in a class-action lawsuit brought by more than 50 former students of John Ware School in Calgary. The students alleged abuse by two former teachers.
Settlement Details
Calgary Court of King’s Bench Justice Michele Hollins approved the payouts Wednesday. The maximum individual payout is $422,000, to be distributed by May 17. Twelve complainants will receive this maximum amount. Other former students will receive $322,000, $222,000, $122,000, $72,000, $47,000, or $24,000, depending on the extent and severity of the abuse they experienced.
The lawsuit named both the Calgary Board of Education and the former teachers as responsible for alleged sexual, physical and psychological abuse.
Previous Legal Action
Michael Gregory, a teacher at the school for 20 years, was charged in 2021 with 17 counts of sexual assault and sexual exploitation. Police reported at the time that several former students had come forward with allegations. Gregory died shortly after being charged; his death was not considered criminal.
The settlement includes $15.8 million from the Calgary Board of Education, as well as a smaller amount from Gregory’s estate. It also provides opportunities for victims to work with the school division on policy and training initiatives.

The Calgary Board of Education has issued an apology for the harm experienced by the former students. The board also commended the courage of those who came forward.
David Corrigan, a lawyer representing the students, stated his clients were pleased the legal process was concluding. “They will all be very satisfied to set the fight aspect of this behind them and to move on with this compensation, which will hopefully help them to pay for any needed therapy and to feel they have finally been recognized,” Corrigan said outside of court.
“This is a major step in healing and moving forward.”
