Renewables Reach Record 58% of German Power Consumption

by Chief Editor July 1, 2026
written by Chief Editor

Renewable energy sources powered 58% of Germany’s electricity consumption during the first half of 2026, marking a record-high for Germany. Industry associations ZSW and BDEW report this figure is an increase from the 55.8% recorded during the same period in 2025, driven by expanded solar and wind capacity and favorable weather conditions.

Why Is Germany’s Renewable Share Increasing?

The growth in renewable generation stems from a combination of aggressive infrastructure investment and improved wind speeds. According to data from ZSW and BDEW, Germany added 8.3 GW of new solar capacity in the first half of 2026 alone. Onshore wind installations also rose, reaching 2.5 GW compared to 2.2 GW in the first half of 2025.

Wind power played a vital role in this shift. An analysis by the International Economic Forum for Renewable Energies (IWR) found that wind power generation jumped by 27% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to a year earlier. While hydropower fell by 7.7% due to lower rainfall, the surge in wind energy more than offset those losses.

Did you know?
Germany aims to install 10 GW of wind power capacity annually to reach a target of 80% renewable electricity generation by 2030.

How Does Wind Power Affect Electricity Prices?

Increased reliance on wind energy has helped stabilize electricity market costs. Dr. Norbert Allnoch, chief executive of the IWR, stated in April that the rise in wind generation significantly eased market pressure. He noted that without this growth, Germany would have been forced to rely more heavily on expensive gas-fired power plants, which would have driven up electricity prices on the stock exchange.

What Are the Next Steps for Energy Policy?

Despite the record-breaking numbers, industry bodies are calling for further legislative support. The ZSW and BDEW have urged the German government to accelerate the adoption of amendments designed to streamline permitting processes. These changes are intended to provide greater certainty for energy investors as the country attempts to meet its 2030 climate goals.

Why did wind power generation increase so much this year?

The increase was driven by newly installed onshore wind capacity and more favorable wind speed conditions compared to the first half of 2025.

What is Germany’s main goal for 2030?

Germany aims to have renewable energy sources account for 80% of its total electricity generation by 2030.
