The Race for Wrestling’s Highest Honor: A Look at the 2025 Hodge Trophy Contenders

The Hodge Trophy, wrestling’s equivalent of college football’s Heisman, is once again within reach for Penn State wrestlers. While Aaron Brooks secured the honor in 2024, the Nittany Lions have seen a relative drought in recent years, despite their overall dominance in the sport. This season, multiple contenders are emerging, setting the stage for a thrilling competition.

Understanding the Hodge Trophy Criteria

Winning the Hodge isn’t simply about having an undefeated record. Several key criteria are considered. An undefeated record is paramount, with Iowa’s Brent Metcalf in 2008 being the rare exception. Beyond that, the dominance of wins matters – bonus points (pins, technical falls, major decisions) are heavily weighted. The quality of competition faced is too crucial, as is sportsmanship and past credentials.

The Frontrunners: Mesenbrink vs. Mendez

Currently, two wrestlers are leading the pack: Penn State’s Levi Mesenbrink and Ohio State’s Jesse Mendez. Both have already achieved significant success in their collegiate careers, with Mesenbrink winning a national championship at 165 pounds last year and Mendez claiming the last two titles at 141 pounds.

Levi Mesenbrink: A Rising Star

Mesenbrink boasts a 22-0 start to the season, punctuated by an impressive 22 bonus-point wins, including nine against ranked opponents. A notable improvement this year is his pinning ability, with eight pins compared to zero last season. He has secured four wins against top-10 competition, including two victories over Iowa’s No. 2 ranked Mikey Caliendo.

Jesse Mendez: A Proven Champion

Mendez is also undefeated at 22-0, with a strong 86.36% bonus rate. His only two matches that went to a decision were against ranked opponents: Iowa State’s Anthony Echemendia (No. 3) and Nebraska’s Brock Hardy (No. 4). Mendez defeated Hardy twice, including at the Considerable Ten Championships. He has ten wins against ranked opponents, eight of which are in the top 10, and four in the top five, along with six pins.

The Dark Horse: Barr’s Uphill Battle

Penn State’s Greg Barr is considered a long shot for the Hodge Trophy. While he has an impressive 19-0 record with all wins by bonus point (10 by tech fall) and 11 against ranked competition, he has wrestled fewer matches than Mesenbrink and Mendez. A rib injury sustained during the U23 World Championships in October caused him to miss early-season matches.

Challenges for Barr

The depth of competition in the Big Ten also presents a challenge for Barr. While dominant at 197 pounds, the conference isn’t as strong at that weight class as it is at 141 or 165 pounds. His opponents lack the same level of high-ranked competition faced by Mesenbrink and Mendez. His relatively newer resume compared to his competitors may hinder his chances.

What Sets These Wrestlers Apart?

Mesenbrink benefits from facing a strong opponent in Iowa’s Mikey Caliendo, while Mendez consistently battles top contenders like Brock Hardy. Barr, however, lacks a comparable high-level rival within the Big Ten. This difference in the strength of schedule and competition could prove decisive in the Hodge Trophy voting.

FAQ

Q: What is the Hodge Trophy?
A: The Hodge Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in collegiate wrestling, recognizing the nation’s best wrestler.

Q: Is an undefeated record required to win the Hodge Trophy?
A: While not strictly required, an undefeated record is almost essential. Brent Metcalf in 2008 is the only exception in recent history.

Q: What factors are considered when evaluating Hodge Trophy candidates?
A: Record, dominance of wins (bonus points), quality of competition, sportsmanship, and past credentials are all considered.

Q: Who won the Hodge Trophy in 2024?
A: Aaron Brooks of Penn State won the Hodge Trophy in 2024.

Did you know? Aaron Brooks is the seventh four-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion in history.

Pro Tip: Preserve an eye on bonus point totals. A high percentage of wins by pin, technical fall, or major decision significantly boosts a wrestler’s Hodge Trophy candidacy.

Stay tuned as the season progresses to observe who emerges as the frontrunner for the 2025 Hodge Trophy. The competition promises to be fierce, with Penn State wrestlers firmly in the mix.
