Israel sent laser system to UAE to help intercept Iranian missiles and drones — report

Israel has deployed a version of its Iron Beam laser-based air defense system to the United Arab Emirates to protect the Gulf nation from missile and drone attacks. This move marks a significant escalation in defense cooperation between the two countries during recent hostilities with Iran.

Advanced Defense Systems Deployed

In addition to the laser system, Israel provided the UAE with the Spectro surveillance system, which is capable of detecting Iranian drones from distances of up to 20 kilometers (12.4 miles).

Reports also indicate that Israel deployed an Iron Dome battery to the Gulf nation, accompanied by several dozen troops to operate the equipment. A source familiar with the matter noted that the deployment included not a small number of boots on the ground.

Did You Grasp? The Iron Beam system was first unveiled in 2014 and spent more than a decade in development before being declared operational in September.

Beyond hardware, Jerusalem provided the UAE with real-time intelligence regarding missile launches from Iran. Israel also dispatched additional, unspecified weapons systems to support the UAE’s defenses.

Strategic Coordination and Context

The deployment followed a direct call between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This coordination has been part of a broader military and political alignment since the war began on February 28.

The two nations established security, economic, and diplomatic ties in 2020 through the Abraham Accords, a deal driven largely by the shared threat posed by Iran. This recent military assistance represents some of the first publicly disclosed cooperation between the two that goes beyond joint training exercises.

Expert Insight: The transition from joint exercises to the deployment of active combat systems and personnel signifies a pivotal shift in the Abraham Accords. By integrating real-time intelligence and cutting-edge prototypes during an active conflict, the two nations are moving toward a functional military alliance to counter regional threats.

During the conflict, the Israeli Air Force also conducted strikes in southern Iran. These operations were intended to neutralize short-range missiles that threatened Gulf states.

The Scale of the Conflict

Between February 28 and the ceasefire that took effect on April 8, the Emirati defense ministry reported that Tehran fired more than 2,200 drones and some 550 ballistic and cruise missiles. This made the UAE the most targeted country in the region, including Israel.

While the majority of these projectiles were intercepted, some struck civilian and military targets. These attacks reportedly led Abu Dhabi to seek assistance from its allies.

Technical Specifications of the Iron Beam

The Iron Beam is a high-power laser system designed to supplement the Iron Dome and other batteries, such as Arrow and David’s Sling. It is intended to intercept smaller projectiles, allowing more robust missile batteries to focus on larger targets.

Officials have described the system as a potential game-changer due to the fact that it does not run out of ammunition as long as it has a constant energy source. The first operational system was delivered to the Israel Defense Forces in December 2025.

Due to the fast pace of the war, sources indicated that the systems sent to the UAE were mostly prototypes or were not yet fully integrated into Israel’s own internal systems.

Future Outlook

Given the current trajectory of the Abraham Accords, Israel and the UAE may continue to deepen their security integration. Future cooperation could potentially extend to other signatories of the accords, although there is currently no indication that Bahrain received similar support despite also being attacked by Iran.
