Title: Former Kalimantan Timur Governor Awang Faroek Ishak Passes Away; KPK Halts Corruption Investigation
In a somber turn of events, Awang Faroek Ishak, the former Governor of Kalimantan Timur (Kaltim), has passed away. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has announced that it will issue a Surat Perintah Penghentian Penyidikan (SP3), effectively halting the ongoing corruption investigation against him.
Tessa Mahardhika, the spokesman for the KPK, conveyed the news on Monday, December 23, 2024. "The KPK will issue an SP3 after receiving and processing the death certificate," he stated.
The KPK extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, expressing sympathy for their loss. "The KPK is saddened by the passing of Awang Faroek Ishak. We express our condolences and hope that his family is granted strength during this difficult time," Mahardhika said.
The KPK had been investigating Awang Faroek in relation to corruption involving the issuance of mining business licenses (IUP) in Kaltim.
The provincial government of Kaltim also expressed its sorrow at the loss of Awang Faroek, a visionary leader who had left an indelible mark on the province. Awang Faroek served as governor from 2008 to 2013 and again from 2013 to 2018. According to the official website of Kutai Regency, Awang Faroek passed away at RSUD Kanujoso Djatiwibowo in Balikpapan at 9:00 PM local time on Sunday, December 22.
