Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Amid Climate Goals

In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) highlighted a record-breaking expansion of solar and wind power installations worldwide. According to the agency, new renewable energy capacity additions reached over 290 gigawatts (GW) in 2023, marking a significant milestone in the transition away from fossil fuels.

China remained the global leader in renewable energy deployment, accounting for more than half of all new installations last year. The country’s aggressive push for wind and solar power has positioned it at the forefront of the clean energy revolution, with over 400 GW of total renewable capacity now operational.

“The pace of renewable energy deployment is accelerating faster than ever before,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “This growth is not just about meeting climate targets—it’s about creating jobs, reducing energy costs, and improving energy security for millions around the world.”

The report also underscored the rapid decline in the cost of renewable technologies. Solar photovoltaic (PV) module prices have dropped by over 80% since 2010, making solar power one of the most affordable energy sources in many regions. Wind energy costs have similarly fallen, with onshore wind now offering some of the lowest electricity generation prices globally.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain. The report noted that billions of people still lack access to reliable electricity, particularly in developing nations. IRENA emphasized the need for increased international cooperation and financing to bridge this energy access gap.

Looking ahead, the agency projected that renewable energy could supply up to 60% of the world’s electricity by 2030, up from around 30% today. This shift would require a tripling of annual renewable energy additions, according to IRENA’s analysis.

The findings come as governments worldwide ramp up their commitments under the Paris Agreement. The U.S., EU, and other major economies have pledged to phase out coal and accelerate the deployment of renewables in the coming decades.
