written by Chief Editor

The Transformative Power of Grieving Through Nature

The concept of using nature to navigate grief has gained significant attention in recent years. As highlighted by the inspiring story of Arjan and Anemoon Berkhuysen, who developed “The Walk of Grief” on Terschelling, moving through the natural world can offer solace and connection in times of loss. This practice, which integrates physical activity with emotional healing, marks a significant trend in modern grief management.

Healing through Movement

Walking as a form of therapy is increasingly recognized for its benefits in mental health. The act of walking provides not only physical exercise but also a space for reflection and emotional processing. Programs like “The Walk of Grief” illustrate how structured walking routes can offer bereaved individuals a pathway to navigate their emotions, with the added support of a community—both live and imagined—sharing similar journeys.

“Studies show that walking can decrease stress hormones by up to 12%,” says Dr. Emily Nguyen, a psychologist specializing in grief therapy. “When added to natural settings, the stress-reducing effects multiply, making it a powerful tool for those dealing with loss.”

The Role of Community in Healing

Community support plays a crucial role in the grieving process. Arjan and Anemoon’s initiative not only facilitates personal healing but also fosters communal bonds, as participants share their stories and support each other. This communal aspect echoes findings from a study by the American Psychological Association, which emphasizes the influence of social support networks in enhancing resilience during grief.

Interactive elements like “struinkistjes”, where walkers can leave mementos, and rituals such as the annual burning of letters also help solidify the communal aspect of grieving, driving home the idea that while grief is personal, it need not be solitary.

Grief Outreach and Education

He’s Sick, But Let’s Still Speak Well Of Him

by Chief Editor January 5, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Title: Jonathan‘s Legacy: A Mother’s Struggle with a Serial Spermdonor

Joyce Zwaart, a 35-year-old mother of two, thought she had found her paths to parenthood when she and her husband John welcomed their children, Alissa (10) and Aiden (7), via a sperm donor named Jonathan. However, what she thought would be a joyous journey has turned into a decade-long battle with a man who, she believes, is a narcissist lying about the extent of his donations.

Jonathan’s Promises

Jonathan, a mass sperm donor, promised the Zwaarts that their child would be his fourth and that he would limit the number of children he helped create to 25. Unbeknownst to them, Jonathan was already well into the hundreds when they agreed to his donation. Joyce and John chose Jonathan because he seemed to be a ‘normal man,’ with the same physical traits as them—blond, curly hair, and blue eyes.

Betrayal and Discovery

In 2020, Joyce stumbled upon an article in The New York Times that revealed Jonathan’s true extent as a serial sperm donor. He had already donated to hundreds of women, and many of his children had been born. Jonathan’s first response was to gaslight Joyce, sending her a barrage of messages full of lies and excuses. It wasn’t until Joyce joined a Facebook group for parents of Jonathan’s children that she understood the full magnitude of his actions.

The Aftermath

Joyce has since joined forces with other parents to demand accountability from Jonathan and the clinics that facilitated his donations. In 2021, he admitted to 550 donations and continued to defend his actions. A Dutch court ordered him to stop donating and to provide a full list of his donations. However, he has since claimed to still be donating, violating the court’s order.

The Netflix Documentary

Last year, Netflix released ‘The Man With 1000 Kids,’ a documentary about Jonathan’s actions. While Joyce worked with the filmmakers to spotlight the love and care within families created by donors, Jonathan used the platform to continue his lies and manipulation. In an interview with Eva Jinek, he accused Joyce of being ‘in the extreme spectrum of aggression’ and claimed that she was only motivated by greed.

Joyce’s Struggle

Despite her anger and frustration, Joyce remains determined to protect her children from the fallout of Jonathan’s actions. She maintains a balance between expressing her rage at Jonathan’s lies and ensuring that her children know they are loved and cherished.

A Call for Change

Joyce believes that her struggle is not just a personal one; it’s a fight for the rights of all families created through sperm donation. She calls for a global registry of sperm donors to prevent future ‘Jonathans’ from exploiting the system. Until then, she and other parents will continue to share their stories and advocate for transparency and accountability in the sperm donation industry.

Keywords: Sperm donation, mass sperm donor, Jonathan, Joyce Zwaart, The Man With 1000 Kids, Netflix documentary, registry of sperm donors

Meta Description: Joyce Zwaart shares her decade-long struggle with mass sperm donor Jonathan, whose lies and manipulation have affected hundreds of families worldwide. She calls for global action to protect families created through sperm donation.

Agents Under Heavy Fire: ‘We’re Being Pelted Here’

by Chief Editor January 4, 2025
written by Chief Editor

In the early hours of New Year’s Day, Dutch police found themselves under an unexpected barrage in The Hague. Not gunfire, but a hail of fireworks was the weapon of choice for revelers who chose to celebrate the new year in a manner that left law enforcement feeling under siege.

“We’re getting bombarded here,” a police spokesperson declared, as fireworks were thrown towards officers stationed in the heart of the city. The incident, which occurred around midnight, was not an isolated one. Reports streamed in from other officers stationed across the city, each detailing similar experiences.

One particularly brazen individual, an entrepreneur, was caught on camera hurling what appeared to be small ‘bombs’ towards the police. The footage, taken during the NieuwjaarsFixture – a tradition where people gather to set off fireworks, went viral. The man, seen wearing a distinctive yellow training vest, was later arrested and is currently facing charges.

The munificence of the Dutch in their New Year’s celebrations is well-known, but this year’s festivities have taken a more dangerous turn. The vicious volley of fireworks caused several officers to sustain minor injuries, and left others shaken. Today, the police have vowed to take stricter measures to ensure the safety of both officers and the public.

“This is unacceptable,” a police spokesperson stated. “We’re here to protect and serve the community, not to be targeted by fireworks. We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly and to respect the law.”

The Dutch court has wasted no time in meting out justice. A Hagenaar, a resident of The Hague, was sentenced to six months in prison for his role in the incident. His verdict comes hot on the heels of another local being handed a six-month sentence for a similar offense.

“We will not tolerate this kind of behavior,” a spokesperson from the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service) affirmed. “Those who endanger the lives of others, especially our law enforcement officers, will face the full force of the law.”

As the Netherlands enters the new year, it appears that stricter enforcement of firework regulations may be necessary to ensure that celebrations remain joyous and safe for all.

Bicycle Parking in Biesieklette: How the Label System Works

Leaving your bicycle in the guarded parking stall at Biesieklette? Here’s what you need to know about the label system and the rules that govern it.

When you park your bike in the stall, you’ll need to check it in using a plastic label. This system isn’t just for convenience; it helps the operators keep track of how long bicycles have been parked, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to use the stalls.

If your bike stays in the stall for more than a day, you’ll be required to pay for its parking. The rules allow bicycles to remain in the stall for up to seven consecutive days. After that period, if the bicycle is still there, it will be designated as ‘abandoned’ or a ‘weesfiets’, and its duration of stay will be monitored.

The municipality of Biesieklette maintains this system to manage parking efficiently and fairly. So, the next time you park your bike in the Biesieklette guarded stall, remember to use the label system and keep track of your bike’s stay to avoid any potential penalties.

Stay informed, stay organized, and enjoy safe and convenient bicycle parking in Biesieklette.

Strong Winds Threaten New Year’s Eve Firework Displays

by Chief Editor December 29, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Title: Stormy New Year‘s Eve: Why the Weather Could Hinder Fireworks Displays and How to Stay Safe

As the clock strikes midnight, ringing in the new year, many of us will be eagerly waiting to watch fiery displays light up the sky. However, weather alerts have been issued, warning that strong winds could disrupt or even cancel these much-anticipated events.

Meteorologist Thijs Smink from Buienradar has advised caution, stating, "The New Year’s Eve forecast is looking quite turbulent, with strong winds that could cause problems, like toppling fireworks stands."

With wind gusts predicted to reach 60 kilometers per hour (37 miles per hour) inland and up to 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour) along the coast, safety is a primary concern. The Nationale Vuurwerk in Rotterdam, a renowned fireworks display, is keeping a close eye on the weather but remains calm, stating, "While we prefer calm winds, it’s not to be, but we’re not alarmist yet."

Organizers are expected to closely monitor wind speeds, as gusts above 9 meters per second (19.9 mph) could make fireworks unpredictable and dangerous. Last year, strong winds led to the cancellation of several planned fireworks shows across the country, and in 2022, Rotterdam’s National Fireworks Show was also called off due to high winds.

But it’s not just the wind that will be a factor this New Year’s Eve. Meteorologist Smink also warns of rain across the country. While it may dampen spirits, the wind and rain will help visibility, ensuring we see the fireworks clearly. Temperatures will hover around 7 to 8°C (44 to 46°F) nationwide.

As the new year begins, temperatures will dip, and we can expect more varied weather, potentially including light snowfalls. However, Smink reassures us, "It won’t be cold enough for a substantial snowfall or ice skating just yet."

Vuurwerkverkoop, the official start of fireworks sales in the Netherlands, kicked off yesterday, drawing large crowds to stores. One Dutch shop, in the northern town of Sint-Maarten, reported brisk business on the first day.

So, as the clock ticks down to midnight, remember to keep an eye on the weather and stay safe. If you’re planning to set off fireworks at home, extra precautions are needed due to the high winds. Let’s welcome 2025 safely and in style!
