Malaysian Badminton Duo Overcome Injury Hurdles at All England Open 2026

Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun demonstrated resilience at the 2026 All England Open, reaching the quarter-finals despite Wei Chong battling a right knee injury. This performance marks a significant improvement for the pair, who had previously faced first-round exits in the tournament in 2022, 2024, and the prior year.

Battling Back from Injury

Wei Chong’s decision to compete despite the injury was a deliberate one. He wanted to prove that his condition wouldn’t hinder his and Tee Kai Wun’s performance. He had focused on rest rather than intensive training leading up to the tournament, prioritizing recovery.

The pair’s quarter-final match against fellow Malaysians Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik was a closely contested affair, ultimately ending in a 16-21, 22-20, 12-21 defeat. This was their eighth encounter, with Chia and Soh winning the last three consecutive matches.

Despite the loss, Wei Chong felt the experience was worthwhile. He and Tee Kai Wun played energetically throughout the week at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham.

A Turning Point for Malaysian Men’s Doubles?

Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun’s progress, alongside Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing’s upset victory over the fourth-seeded Indian pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, signals a potential shift in the landscape of Malaysian men’s doubles badminton. The All England Open 2026 saw multiple Malaysian pairs advance to the later stages of the competition.

The duo will now focus on recovery, with approximately three weeks to prepare for the Asian Championships in Ningbo, China, from April 7-12. Wei Chong aims to maximize this time to rehabilitate his right knee.

Women’s Doubles Breakthrough

In a separate highlight for Malaysia, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah reached the semi-finals – a feat not achieved by a Malaysian women’s doubles pair in 19 years. The last time a Malaysian women’s pair reached this stage was Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Tty in 2007.

Pearly and Thinaah secured their semi-final spot with a 21-9, 21-18 victory over Indonesia’s Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari. They will now face South Korea’s Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee for a place in the final.
