Two men, aged 34 and 46, were arrested in Mookgopong, Limpopo, after allegedly attempting to fraudulently obtain meat valued at R1.2 million. The arrests followed an incident that began on Monday, April 27th, when an agricultural hub in Naboomspruit received an order from an individual claiming to represent a catering company.
Fake Payment Scheme Uncovered
The caller reportedly placed a substantial order and provided what appeared to be proof of payment via electronic transfer. However, the company’s finance team discovered that no payment had actually been received, revealing the scheme.
Police spokesman Hlulani Mashaba stated that officers were alerted to the incident and subsequently “played along” to facilitate the suspects’ apprehension. The delivery location was set for Jubilee Mall in Hammanskraal, Tshwane.
According to Mashaba, one suspect entered the truck to direct the driver, while a second suspect joined to oversee the unloading process. Both individuals were arrested at the scene before they could accept possession of the goods.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Naboomspruit Magistrates Court to face fraud charges.
