Odisha NGO Intern Molested: 20 Arrested in Tribal Area Case

Police in Odisha have arrested 20 people, including several juveniles, following the mob assault and molestation of a 22-year-old female NGO intern in Rayagada. The incident, which occurred on June 16, was fueled by unfounded rumors of child kidnapping in the region. The victim and her 22-year-old male colleague, both fellows working in tribal areas since September, were intercepted while traveling by scooter.

How the assault unfolded

According to Rayagada Superintendent of Police Raj Prasad, the victims were navigating the district using Google Maps when they were stopped by a local resident who questioned their identity and intentions. Despite the woman presenting her identification, the situation escalated as a crowd gathered. The victims attempted to flee on their scooter, but the vehicle eventually slipped and overturned near a field around 8:30 p.m. The mob subsequently caught the pair, beating the man and stripping and molesting the woman. Local driver Balaram Bagh, who witnessed the attack, intervened to pull the victims toward a police vehicle and provided his own clothing to the woman after her dress was torn by the mob.

How the assault unfolded

The role of viral rumors

The violence highlights the dangerous impact of localized misinformation. Police attribute the attack to rumors regarding the presence of “child kidnappers” circulating in the area. This incident mirrors broader societal challenges where digital navigation and unfamiliarity with remote regions can trigger hostile responses from local populations suspicious of outsiders. The intensity of the mob was such that they pursued the police vehicle to the local community health center and attempted to vandalize the medical facility, according to witness Balaram Bagh.

What happens next in the investigation

Authorities have registered three cases in connection with the attack. While 20 suspects are currently in custody, Rayagada SP Raj Prasad indicated that more arrests are likely as the investigation continues. The victims, who received medical treatment at a community health center, have been handed over to their families. Liby Johnson, executive director of the NGO Gram Vikas, stated that the two victims are not currently prepared to speak about the incident. As the legal process moves forward, analysts expect the focus will remain on identifying additional participants in the mob and addressing the security concerns for NGO workers operating in tribal districts.
