A Baltimore police officer is recovering after being shot during a hostage situation in the Park Heights neighborhood on Tuesday. The suspect involved was fatally shot by a SWAT sniper after firing at officers and threatening another individual.

The incident began shortly before noon with a call regarding a burglary in progress in the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue. Upon arrival, officers were immediately met with gunfire from inside the residence, striking an officer in the leg. Fellow officers applied a tourniquet and transported the injured officer to Shock Trauma.

During the standoff, the suspect repeatedly appeared at a window, holding a gun to the head of another person inside the home. A female victim too sustained injuries after jumping from a window and was transported to a local hospital.

SWAT officers responded to the scene, and a sniper ultimately shot and killed the suspect. A firearm was recovered at the scene. The officer, a 13-year veteran of the Baltimore Police Department, is reported to be in stable condition.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott stated his gratitude for the swift response of the BPD officers and expressed relief that the situation was brought under control quickly. The Maryland Attorney General’s Office is now investigating the incident.

The nearby Israel Jewish School was placed on lockdown during the incident as a precautionary measure.
