At the time, researchers noted that most of the 42 known orangutan habitat pockets were already in poor condition, making the protection of these specific areas a priority to prevent local extinctions.

Tempo observed ongoing plantation development in May 2026, noting that more than half of the land cleared in the previous year occurred within primary forests.
