Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat RRTS on Sunday, during a visit to Shatabdi Nagar in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The Prime Minister will also dedicate development works totaling approximately Rs 12,930 crore to the city and is scheduled to seize a metro ride to Meerut South station before addressing a public gathering.
A New Era for Regional Transit
The program marks the full operationalisation of the 82-km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, alongside the launch of the Meerut Metro. This is a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, with both services running on shared infrastructure. The integrated network is expected to enable faster intercity and intra-city travel, reduce road congestion, and lower vehicular carbon dioxide emissions.
The inauguration of the Namo Bharat RRTS is anticipated to improve daily life across the National Capital Region (NCR) by significantly reducing travel time between Meerut, Ghaziabad, and Delhi. Improved connectivity is expected to allow professionals to live farther from the capital while maintaining employment in major urban hubs, potentially enhancing work-life balance and lowering commuting costs. Students, entrepreneurs, and families are also expected to benefit from easier travel for education, business, and personal needs.
Currently, the Delhi–Meerut RRTS enables travel from Sarai Kale Khan to Modipuram in 58 minutes, to Begumpul in 54 minutes, and to Shatabdi Nagar in 50 minutes. By comparison, the same journey by road can take approximately one and a half hours, depending on traffic conditions.
Meerut Metro Details
Alongside the RRTS rollout, Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to inaugurate the Meerut Metro services between Meerut South and Modipuram. The Meerut Metro will operate on the same infrastructure as the Namo Bharat system. The metro will cover the 21-km corridor in approximately 30 minutes, including all scheduled stops.
The Meerut Metro will be India’s fastest metro system, with a maximum operational speed of around 120 kmph. The fully air-conditioned, three-coach trains feature stainless-steel construction and a fluorescent green, blue, and orange color scheme. They are equipped with regenerative braking systems, Automatic Train Protection, and Automatic Train Operation technologies, as well as luggage racks, CCTV cameras, and USB charging ports. Each train has a capacity of over 700 passengers, including 173 seated commuters, with reserved seating for women, senior citizens, and passengers with disabilities.
