Article:

Two former governors of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, better known as Ahok, and Anies Baswedan, have hinted at a political surprise in 2025. Both have asked all parties to wait for their "main event" date.

Ahok and Anies, who were bitter rivals in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election and the 2024 Indonesian legislative and presidential elections, shared this information after attending an event at Jakarta City Hall on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (Dec 31, 2024). They appeared to be on good terms, whispering to each other during the event, and were seen laughing and smiling together.

When asked what they had discussed during their whispered conversation, neither former governor wished to reveal the details. "Pak Ahok, what did you whisper about? I’ll tell you what I whispered…," said Anies humorously, putting his arm around Ahok.

Ahok then responded, refusing to divulge what he had whispered to his former rival. "Wait until next month," Ahok said, moving closer to Anies.

"Wait, wait for our ‘main event’ date. You’ve been told to wait, so just wait," added Anies, grinning.

Anies also discussed his current relationship with Ahok. He stated that despite their differing political stances in previous elections, they now maintain a cordial relationship. "You’re the ones causing the tension," Anies said, still smiling.

Former Jakarta governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat also joined in, hinting at a surprise in the coming year. "There’s a surprise in store for next year. You’ll see," Djarot said.

The event, themed "Jakarta’s Hope Aboard", was a New Year’s Eve celebration organized by the Jakarta Provincial Government. In attendance were not only the aforementioned former governors and vice governors, but also the leading gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial candidates of the 2024 elections, including Pramono Anung, Rano Karno, Suswono, and Kun Wardana.

All present were clad in batik attire, while the acting governor, Teguh Setyabudi, donned a traditional Betawi shirt. Upon their arrival at the City Hall’s pendopo, they were greeted with food and had a group photo taken before proceeding to their meal.

After the 2024 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election, Ridwan Kamil-Suswono (RIDO), the first pair of candidates, accepted the final results declared by the Jakarta Democratic Party consortia (KPUD). RIDO congratulated the third pair, Pramono Anung-Rano Karno, who had secured the lead. “We accept the results of the Jakarta Gubernatorial Election as declared by KPUD. We congratulate Mr. Pramono Anung and Mr. Rano Karno, who will lead Jakarta for the next five years,” said Ridwan Kamil during a press conference at the Jakarta Golkar Party’s office on Friday, December 13, 2024.

Ridwan Kamil also thanked all the candidates for a fair competition, extending his gratitude to the second pair, Dharma Pongrekun-Kun Wardana. “Thank you for the competition, which has been a learning experience for us. We also thank Mr. Dharma Pongrekun and Mr. Kun Wardana, who competed alongside us. We hope that Mr. Pram and Mr. Rano can faithfully fulfill the aspirations of Jakarta’s residents,” he added.

Ridwan Kamil, the former Governor of West Java, has formally accepted the results of the Jakarta gubernatorial election, extending his congratulations to the winners, Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno. The official results, announced by the General Election Commission (KPU), saw the incumbent pair secure a second term with approximately 55.7% of the votes.

Acceptance Speech

In a televised speech, Ridwan Kamil, who ran a strong campaign on an environmental platform, congratulated the winners. "I wish to express my heartfelt congratulations to Governor Anies and Deputy Governor Sandiaga," he said. "I have faith in their commitment and capability to lead Jakarta forward."

He added, "Although the results did not favor our team, we respect the people’s choice. Democratic processes are about accepting outcomes, whether victory or defeat, with grace and sportsmanship."

Campaign and Issues

Ridwan Kamil’s gubernatorial campaign focused heavily on sustainability and green initiatives. He proposed ambitious plans to tackle Jakarta’s notorious traffic congestion, improve public transportation, and promote the city as a hub for innovation and technology. Conclusion

The 2022 Jakarta gubernatorial election may have concluded with Ridwan Kamil accepting defeat, but his commitment to public service and sustainable development remains unwavering. As Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno commence their second term, Ridwan Kamil’s support and collaboration will be crucial in driving Jakarta’s progress and growth. In true democratic spirit, Ridwan Kamil has not only accepted the results but has also extended an olive branch, setting the stage for unity and cooperation in the days ahead.
